Performance meters advice

Hawaii is paradise.......but one thing I hate about it is no dragstrip, no track, and dyno runs are expensive. This leads us to the subject of performance meters. What meters (if any) are you guys running in your car? Which ones are accurate (ie match drag and dyno results). I know that GPS would be optimal (G-TEC Pro), but also like something a little less bulky (Passport G-Timer GT2)...

Optimal:
Accurate, 1/4 mile, 0-60, HP, TQ, etc.....plus not bulky and matches amber cockpit setup

any suggestions?

I have a PerformanceBox. You can also check DriftBox, Vbox.

I have a Passport G-Timer GT2 and I like it for 0 to 60, 0 to 100, 1/4 mile runs. However most people on this forum use a GPS based system, typically PerformanceBox produced by the company VBOX. You'll hear both terms used interchangeably on the formum.

Although the GT2 does a good job all of its runs have to start with the car completely stopped. There's no way to do runs that start with the car moving like 60 to 130 runs. People like these runs because they take the launch / driver performance / tire performance out of the equation.

Also the PerformanceBox validates your runs by ensuring that the downhill slope is not too steep. You can also use it for lap times if you ever track your car and even compare your performance on one lap to anothers by logging each lap and overlaying them.

Having said all of that I have managed to reduce my 60 foot times, zero to sixty times and 1/4 mile times by practicing with the GT2. There's nothing like the ability to practice quite a few launches getting immediate feedback. Before long you get a feel for how you've done before you even read the display.

One day I'll get the probably get the PerformanceBox for the additional features.

I have the Gtech Pro..and love the software, graphing functions, and the way it logs runs way better the the Vbox. However......the Gtech is a mechanical accelerometer and is subject to variables such as pitch, clutch intertia, etc, which throw it off. You can also have 3 very accurate runs, and then one inaccurate run, rendering it almost useless, since you never know if a particular run is accurate or a outliner.

Vbox is made by Racelogic...the performance box is fine for the average consumer without having to spend thousands for their professional models. This is what needs to be used, as it is consistent, measures slope, etc. Same technology used by almost all the magazines for their test results too. It is the most important tool I have for fine tuning my BMWs. There is no way seat of the pants, or sound will tell you how a car is running. That is why all these people with CPS enabled etc would be surprised what happens to trap speeds when you "think" your car is running great.

FYI: When I ran 2 Vbox units in my car together, they ran IDENTICAL times.

The 2010 model G-Tech "Fanatic" Pro SS & RR use GPS, from the feedback so far seems G-Tech makes a pretty solid product. The "Fanatic" SS is $200 and the "Fanatic" RR is $300 (maps out track, laps, etc). $200 bucks seems pretty nice for a GPS enabled performance meter.

I also have the Performance Box by Racelogic since the end of last year and it's very practical and easy to use.

I'll try to have it hooked up to my car's GPS antenna in order to forego the external antenna cable shortly.

Isn't that a mechanically based accelerometer though? Subject to perfect mounting, pitch etc? I know people were posting some wildly wrong results on the forum not too long ago. What I like to do is run it at the track and compare the test results with the drag slip. And if you do, let us know the results, it would be interesting. Or if you have a friend with a Vbox, run them side by side. My Gtech and Vbox show identical ETs "at times". Unfortunately the one that is going to deviate occasionally will be the Gtech.

The dynolicious app is very inconsistent, every result is different. I pulled 595 HP the other day.....wooohoooo. If your just messing around with an iPhone I had better results (more consistent) with the "pocketdyno+".

One cool feature on the pocketdyno+ is it logs a GPS location with a speed in your map application. My favorite part is that there is also no way to clear your history. That way if you get arrested by the cops they will have plenty of evidence to charge you with reckless driving.
