HPFP finally gave up ...
It took the fuel pump four years and 70K miles to croak but it couldn't have chosen a better time to do it ... in the midst of a 1750 mile drive from the southwest to the northeast. I can't complain though ... it broke down 20 miles from a BMW dealership ... as if it knew!
I received the recall letter a few months back but it stated that I didn't HAVE to get it done if my HPFP was in working order and there was something in the letter about them honoring the recall at a later time. So the dealer replaced the HPFP, the fuel injectors, and 2 of the spark plugs (they would only cover under the recall the parts that threw a fault code). I went ahead and replaced the other 4 spark plugs out of pocket just for good measure. The dealer also reflashed the car's computer so I lost my 16psi boost patch (obviously I did not bring that up; I also made sure to disable the P3 boost gauge). In a somewhat related story, one of my tires croaked today ... I was shocked when I heard the "Tire Low" chime, looked at the in-dash information screen and saw the outline of a vehicle and an arrow indicating that the rear right tire was the culprit. Holy s***!!! I no longer have to check all tires until I find the one(s) responsible for the warning. Thanks!

That sucks! If it makes you feel any better, after the latest fix, it seems like there are less threads about failures and the HPFP's are holding up.

+1 I haven't seen anyone complain about the HPFP post-recall.

It's not a suprise since the history shows that it's not the pump itself that is the problem....

So what has history shown as the root cause of the HPFP failures then?

Well, that would be the hundreds of threads on here of multiple failures/multiple symptoms on the same car. Logic would dictate that if as many as 5 or 6 "different" pump fail on one car...that something else is causing it. And since this has happened SO many times, it just seems that something else must be causing these failures.
I'm no expert and could be wrong....there is no absolute proof of either fact. I was hoping it was the pump itself and since the recall, I hadn't heard of any of the "Newer" pumps failing till now. So it sounds like that's even more proof that it's something causing these pumps to fail. But hardly anyone will concede to that point other than trackrat and a few others. That's what sucks about this whole thing is that BWM refuses to put engineers on this and figure out exactly what the problem is. Rather they want to just throw new pumps in everyone's car. There was a long time experienced mechanic in Germany that I took my cars to. He didn't speak English too well when having to explain something in detail but he was drawing diagrams for me showing me what he thought the problem was. I can't remember exactly what these showed but it sure looked like he was trying to convey what's causing the pumps to fail...not what was wrong with the pumps themselves.

Besides, I asked the question because gizmo's post seemed to imply that he knew the cause as something other than the pump. Was just wondering what the other prevelent theories were?? |
