K&N for 335d

Has anyone tried the K&N drop-in filter for the 335d? It appears to be the only modification available to the intake system.

I would never use K&N in a daily driver.

Just out of curiosity, why do you say so? I'm considering the Euro AirBox for my NA engine, and I would jump to replace the BMW paper cone filter with the K&N cone filter. What's your beef with them? I don't mean that in an insulting way, I just want to understand why you don't like them.

No reason to let more dirt in engine for a different sound. Hp gains are negligible

i agree. Oiled filters like K&N have caused gummed up MAF's and stuck idle air control valves on my older cars. Its not K&N only, but Injen and other oil-based filters. i've switched to dry flow filters like AEM. They seem thicker and filter better. Gauze-type seems too porous.

While i'm sure it lets in more dirt than a conventional paper filter does i really dont think it is going to make that much of a difference in your car unless you are driving in a dusty climate all day every day. I have been using some sort of K&N filter in all my cars/motorcycles since 1992 and have never faced any issues. Granted i change my oil frequently (every 2500 miles using synthetics)on my other cars, once every 6 months on my motorcycle and atv and on my E90 i change it once a year (mine is a 2006 with 19,000 miles) ii also inspect the K&N filters every service and will either clean or replace it if it looks less than serviceable.

K&N million Mile Warranty, filter outlasts your engine!

Seems to be common that people get MAS errors on BMW and other cars from K&N oil as I read in forum for our pilot. Here in Arizona lots of dust, so I'll keep OEM. FYI: I removed the K&N in my Honda after reading all the posts about K&N not cleaning air as well as paper OEM filters.

Explains why K&N gives million mile warranty on the filter. They know your engine wont last that long with a K&N in it.

Honestly as a daily driver I've seen zero evidence where anything other than OEM was best.

I've had a K&N in my car for about 30k miles...no issues with it whatsoever, but no real differences, either.

I've had a K&N in my 4-Runner for over 120K miles - No issues other than saving $ by not buying the replacement paper filters.

Running a BMC in the M3. Again, no issues.

Looking at eventually getting one for the 335d.

Any vehicle I plan to keep will have one.

This.

If there were anything to be gained by installing something as easy as a filter, cone or otherwise, one would think the car manufacturers would install them. They might make a car sound a little better but that's all that will be gained and at the sacrafice of allowing more dirt into the engine.

What incentive would an automobile manufacturer have to provide a reusable filter instead of selling replacement filters to you for the life of the car?

Id rather spend $25 every couple of years on a OEM airfilter instead of scoffed cylinder walls from 1950 air filtrations tech.
