Doesn't really matter unless you have the base stereo (which is fairly rare) as most cars have either the MID or Onbord Monitor. If you remove either of those, you will lose access to a lot of the car's functionality and also generate fault codes.

that's why I'm sticking with the stock headunit + amp, speaker and sub upgrade, I don't want to have a bunch of useless buttons on my steering wheel

Yes, I recently had a problem with my steering lock. BMW can't fix the issue until the stock radio is plugged back in. They did sayhowever, that after the issue is resolved that I would be able to remove it again with no ill effects.

but then if you have a problem with the steering lock again, they'll have to plug in the OEM deck again?? that seems very tedious
