What are the signs of a failing fuel pump?

My 335i seems to have a bit less power lately, and some hesitation during acceleration. When cold, it seems to "buck" a little bit too.

Any of these signs of a failing pump?

Yes, but you will notice hesitation while the engine is warm... and soon you will see extended cranking before it fires up, rough idle, and then finally it will stall on you.

Limp mode is a 99% sure symptom.

..your going to file a claim for a stolen vehicle just because of the fuel pump?

the engine turns over for a good 5-6 seconds without starting... like it isnt getting fuel. Then when it does actually fire up, it idles really sparatically... and then eventually either dies, or goes back to normal.

Mine just flat out died... I could restart it, but it would die soon after, as soon as I tried to drive.

Rix, I checked my build... 9/06... at idle the car kinda vibrates for a few seconds then off for a second then vibrates again a few seconds consistently... like a shuddering... foreshadowing a fuel pump failure?

How many miles did you have at time of failure?

My car has 6500 mi and is now having some rough idle after cold starts. Yesterday, it lurched a bit after a semi-cold start (about 150 or 160deg - had been sitting for about 2 hours after being warm). I think I'm next...

I thought I was ok since it seemed like most people's fuel pumps failed early (with less than 6500 mi). But, now I'm worried....

Does this happen only when the car is cold or does it also happen when the car is warm?

Our 335s have a notoriously rough for the first minute or two after you start them when they are cold. That happens to me even though it is 80degrees outside. I have no idea how the car performs in cold weather.

If it only happens when it is cold, I believe that there is a software update that addresses this issue. If it happens when the car is warm, the fuel pump might be the issue. The dealer apparently has a simple test to tell if your pump is going bad.

Also have just noted that car idles with the vibrating then after ~ 5 min of idle in park car begins to surge as though someone is giving it gas and the tach goes up a little for a second or two then down then up then down then more vibrating on and off.. normal??

My car was build during the last week of November 2006. Is there a chance that I too got a defective pump?

Really? Mine's pretty smooth at cold start-up. For the 1st minute, the exhaust valve is shut to one of the pipes..sounds weird...but smooth.
