Golf tee to bmw performance exhaust

Is there anyone out there who has done the golf tee and decided it just wasn't enough and went ahead and did the BMW performance exhaust? Just need some more input before I drop 1300 bucks.

I think if your going to spend the extra cash on an exhaust you should at least try to get some performance out of it, even as minor as it may be. I don't think the BMW performance exhaust offers anything in the way of performance.

I own both the AE Performance Exhaust on my 335i and the BMW Performance Exhaust on my 335is and I prefer the sound of the BMW exhaust over the AE.

Neither will net you much, if any whp. So choose by looks/sounds.

Disclaimer: Don't get me wrong, I love the AE exhaust... I was just pleasantly surprised by how aggressive and throaty the BMW perf exhaust actually is. Definitely unexpected from an OEM production piece.

To the original question. I've done the golf tee mod on my bmw perf exhaust. It sounds awesome. Nothing to worry about

Doubt there's any real power difference from stock and the BMW performance exhaust. Out of curiosity if anyone has compared does the OEM PE setup sound similar to a stock v8 x6? My boss has one and I get to drive it occasionally. Sounds mean..

Btw thanks for everyone's help.

The BMW performance exhaust does sound amazing but if you want a full exhaust system there some systems out there that run the same or are a little more than the BMW performance.

BMW PE will get you better sound and maybe a small amount of reduced backpressure, because it's basically just two less-restrictive mufflers. If you want performance, you will need to go with a cat-back system with larger diameter tubing, which may be more expensive but not sound as good or induce some harmonic droning at cruise speeds. Most people who do the BMW PE are very happy with it.

+1 I had vanguard on my old 335i and now have the bmw perf on 335is and i love it. Can't wait to hear how it'll sound with some 3" downpipes.

Get the bmw perf, u won't regret it.

does it sound any different after your 335is warms up? i find that most people dont realize the sound calms down a lot after the car gets through the initial warm up, rendering the golf tee somewhat useless.

let me know, i've been thinking about doing the golf tee on my 'is' as well.

I had the golf tee mod on my '07 335i sedan but it wasn't aggressive enough. Deleted the resonator (that only the sedans have) and put on the BMW PE. The sounds is now great -- really agressive on cold starts, but then it mellows down after 1-2 minutes. Still pretty aggressive but no drone. With the windows up, it sounds good but you can still easily talk inside.

I like driving with the windows cracked or down to get the full effect of the exhaust now. Sounds great -- not obnoxious but definitely aggressive.

Performance wise, I'm sure there wasn't a big hp gain, but the combo of deleting the resonator and adding the PE made the car feel noticeably more responsive and a little quicker.

PE and downpipes sound great, but the cold start in the morning in a parking structure is enough to wake the dead. I try not too let the car idle too long. I just give it a few seconds, put it in first and go...sure the neighbors appreciate it.

If only the BMW PE wasn't so overpriced, but then so are all of the exhausts for this car.

I tried the golf tee mod before I got the PE. Golf tee is a waste of time IMO. The exhaust flap is closed mostly when the car has a cold start. It remains open during regular driving. Get the PE. The only regret I have is that I waited so long.

And don't get an exhaust for hp. You could get the Cobb and jb4 for the cast of an exhaust.

I agree the BMW pe is way too expensive. I got my vanguard for 100 cheaper and to me it sounds way better with an actual gain. Minimal gain.. But still

I can assure you mine doesn't. The only way yours might is that you are saying the stock 335IS exhaust = BMW performance exhaust - and that obviously isn't the case.

Agree 100%. People go on and on about the golf tee mod like it's some amazing discovery. The only positive thing is that it's free and takes 2 minutes to do. People get all hot and bothered because they hear it at cold start - which lasts about 1 minute.

Check around. When I got mine over a year ago they were almost $2k list, but most dealers would more or less match online pricing in the $1600-$1700 range. They've come down even more, I think more like $1200-$1300 now. That's actually quite a bit less than AE, HKS and a few others.

As far as performance, the biggest reason the BMW Perf doesn't match some of the others is that you retain the secondary cats. When Grassroots Motorsports compared a bunch of them a few years back the best performing was the HKS if I remember - adding a whopping 13 hp. BMW claims 4-5. I'm guess BMW without the secondary cats would be so close it wouldn't matter. Personal preference but at this point I like the no hassle at the dealer, emissions legal aspect.

As crazy as it sounds if I had to pick between the exhaust and the tune I'd pick the exhaust. It's that good.

$1,200 is still insane for the exhaust.

It'll be similar to the one I did of my vanguard on my 08-
