Someone ripped off my M3 rep spoiler while my car was parked at a friends house. I had it attached with the grey 3M tape from Home depot. Now I have that gunk left over on my trunk. I tried peeling it off slowly but even then, it's leaving a residue. How can I get this all cleaned up so I can order a new one to replace the old.....

goo gone maybe? If that doesn't work, try a little paint thiner.

You need an eraser wheel or a lot of elbow grease.

Eraser wheel works like magic, I've removed tape, side mouldings, etc from a bunch of different vehicles with this wheel. It may cost a little more than your other options but it won't hurt your paint.

3M makes a spray to remove it that works pretty well.

I bought a bottle from an auto paint supply store, but you can usually find a smaller bottle at any of the chain parts stores(Autozone, O'Reilly's etc).

On my old car, some side trims eventually gave way and started peeling off, and the adhesive gunk was left on the car. I found out that the best way to remove adhesive gunk from body paint is:

1) Heat up the area with hair dryer to a hot temperature, but not TOO hot (don't use a heat gun, that will definitely damage the paint).

2) With your fingers, rub away as much as of the material as you can

3) Use goo-gone and lots of cottons, then start wiping away to get rid of residuals

I don't understand why people want to come up with jerry-rig solutions, when there is a technically correct solution.

lighter fluid works wonders. just be sure to wipe it all off afterwards.

Goo Gone, adhesive remover, any of that will work...just make sure you thoroughly clean the area after and re-wax it, as any of that stuff will strip off the wax.

BMW sells betalink adhesive to apply numerous aftermarket parts. With that you can also get the Betalink adhesive remover. While I have used goo gone before, the betalink adhesive remover may be the safest option.

Sweet thanks guys! I just spent a few hours removing the tape gunk itself and then used goo gone to clean up what I could...figure now that I got as much as I could off, gotta start looking for a replacement...
