Just wondering where most of my fellow stick drivers like to be...
3rd or 4th gear around town? 5th or 6th gear on the highway? To be honest I like 4th gear around town and even more so on the highway, go figure! |

Down with the N54.

This will depend on engine load, road type, and diving style (economic, spirited, etc). If I'm cruising (which is usually the case) I'm in the highest gear allowed. Spirited driving, that's a different story entirely.
So... What's the point in here? |

Don't over think it, just where do you find yourself, gear wise, while driving around. Simple, no...

Wherever I'm driving, I usually stay around 2500 rpm.

In general, I keep revs between 1500-2000, so cruising @ 40 MPH = 5th gear. I don't go to 6th unless on the highway (60+).
Usually I skip 4th and go 3>5th. The 4th gear ratio is very similar to 5th, and if you are under 2500 it makes such a small difference. In traffic, I like 3rd gear. It doesn't pull you back like 2nd gear.

Really depends on traffic...
I am a lazy ass, I don't like to use my foot-brakes. I rely mostly on engine braking.

Cruising - 3rd at 25
4th or 5th at 40 6th at 60 Pretty standard I think most people try to keep there rpms down for better gas mileage. Ripping it is a different story obviously. |

I always stay right at or slightly above 2k rpms when driving....not sure why but i've always driven that way. I dont' like to bog it down. Every once in a while i'll ring it out and stretch the legs

the true joy of driving a manual is running the car the way you want to. As great as the 6AT is, sometimes I do miss the true control of a manual. Thing is, I rarely do any spirited driving anymore so the 6AT is superior in that aspect

I really can’t believe what I’m reading here fellas. There are a lot of grannys putting around in their Buick geezmobiles at higher engine RPMs than some of you. The BMW factory rev limiter on the high performance N54B30 engine is set at 7,000 RPM and the engine's “sweet spot” (where horsepower and torque are maximized) is around 5,000 RPM. This car is NOT your father's Oldsmobile with engines that started throwing rods at 5,000 RPM. BMW owners shouldn't be hesitant about operating their cars at high engine RPMs.

I skip shift all the time. I prefer the 1-3-6 but occasionally I will start in 2nd super lazy man style between multiple stop signs.
