Just cracked a rim

I was driving through a parking lot to turn around and hit a massive pothole. Cracked my passenger side front wheel and am waiting for a tow.

Pothole was right after a coned off area where potholes were. Definetely going to contact the mall management for reimbursement. Its rediculous.

FML!

No Livingston Mall.

If only I didn't cut through the mall I would have missed it. It was actually on a road that circles the mall. Cones were blocking off an area right BEFORE the pothole.

Why wouldn't you put the cone IN the pothole?

It was seriously 3 - 4 inches deep. These are pictures of the pothole, taken with only light from the officer's spotlight. You can see the cones before them. I was driving toward the camera.

Not very good visibility.

I'm going back at like 6AM to take pictures before they move any cones. Hopefully that's early enough!

Yes, hopefully. It would suck to have to replace various arms, etc.

Too tired to take the wheel off and take pictures. I'll do it in the AM. The crack is pretty bad though. About 12-18 inches in length. But oddly enough, I think the tire is fine....checked the pressure of the other wheel, 32psi.

Sorry to hear that. It's not the first time I've heard of a Breyton rim cracking and it won't be the last.

Great looking rims, but they are downright dangerous wheels. No wheel should crack driving in a parking lot I don't care what the road surface looked like. Imagine if you hit a pot hole traveling at highway speed? Wheels should bend sure, but split or crack no way.

I actually placed an order for these wheels and thank god tire rack didn't have them in stock because after researching further I came across a number of stories of these rims splitting. Tire Rack tried to feed me some BS about people hitting pot holes blah blah blah. Then I read about the guy who was driving on the highway and his rim split in two, and he rolled his car. NOW WAY NOW HOW! Needless to say I canceled my order.

Ohh wow. That's a pretty intense story. I wasn't going that fast. Maybe 30-35mph. But I had 4 people in the car including me. Stock xi suspension.

I went this morning to check the depth of the pothole/take better pictures of the area. It was 2 inches deep. It looked deeper last night because there was water in it and it was very dark.

Anyone know what the likely hood of getting the mall to cover this? It is a private road, but they did cone off other potholes. They didn't cone this one off. I think that they should be held liable, no?

Also I mounted my stock wheels and went to the gas station to check pressures. My wheel bearing is shot. All the links to the hub look ok. No visible damage or vibrations when driving up to 50mph.

But the wheel bearing is grinding and clicking like crazy!

Holy crap bro I know EXACTLY where you're talking about!!! I almost whacked that one last month!! You know, it's Livingstein, you'd think those rich bastards would have the roads perfectly paved. Wow I haven't been to that mall in YEARS. Last month I was just turning around for reasons unknown in there and was like whoa, i'd have been fcked if I hit that with my 19s. Hope it all turns out okay.

Ouch bro, that sucks. I swear it ain't worth it having 19s around here. I had a situation much like yours, but on the Henry Hudson. They stripped the road down a few weeks back, and I was driving at night. The left lane was blocked, but then it opened again. With a Range Rover on the right of me, and a divider on the left, there was no way I could avoid whacking the three manhole covers raised 3 inches out of the road, one, after the other, after the other. I was able to drive to my gf's, stay all weekend, then drive 40 miles of highway back to Morristown BMW largely in part due to the Bridgestone Potenza RFTs that they packaged with my BMW 199 black 19s. I curse those RFTs most days, but I think the outcome would have been far worse without them. Wanna know the kicker? 6 hours later the whole road was paved smooth as a baby's bottom....grr!

Ohh man that does suck!

I'm thinking about replacing that wheel, selling/trading them and getting a set of silver 18's

Or maybe 162's in gunmetal.

Was the mall open or closed when you drove through the lot? How fast were you going - i.e. were you exceeding the parking lot speed limit? Did you have business in that mall?

All those questions will determine how liable the mall is.

Don't beat yourself up over this. If it was your time to crack that rim then a pothole would have jumped out in front of you on the highway.

Closed. About 30mph. No. I missed a light and used the mall to cut through to turn around.

I updated the link in mt original post. Mall is covering it. They were very nice and understanding.....I wasn't expecting that but I'm not complaining!
