83/70 Reckless Driving in VA
So, this past Wednesday I flew down to Charleston, South Carolina to help my brother, who just finished Nuclear Power school - Kudos to him, drive back to NY. It's about 800 miles so I volunteered to drive from North Carolina through Virginia. I was driving on I 95 N, on the border of North Carolina and Virginia, and got pulled over for doing 83 in 70. I was indeed going a bit too fast although traffic was passing me by. I attribute getting pulled over partly due to: a. The car was a 350z b. Out of state plates c. NY plates especially. I'm ok with a speeding ticket, the law is the law, but the part that's bullshit is any speed over 80mph is considered "Reckless Driving" and I have to appear in court regardless of pleading guilty. My bro flashed his military ID, which has worked on 5 tickets in the past, and the cop didn't even acknowledge it. Tried reasoning with him to knock it down to 79 but he was not having it. Not sure what I'm gonna do. I work a full time job and they do provide legal services that I may be seeking. Any advice?

I don't know the law in that area, but that is harsh to put a wreckless on 13 over! thats only a 2 point ticket in jersey...
A good lawyer should be able to take care of it though

that sucks, i did that drive, although not as far few weeks ago (going down to VIR) and i was actually thinking of how much it'd suck if i got nailed with a ticket. i know RD's are illegal but i had mine on anyway. knowing they could detect it, i kept it on when driving on roads with other cars/traffic so they wouldn't be able to single me out. if it was open road, i turned it off the second i heard any beep. it actually "saved" (notified) me 4x during that long weekend...

I hired a lawyer in VA through my employer free of charge. He told me that if I plead guilty there's a chance I could lose my license in NY. So, the goal is to get it plead down to defective equipment. VA's got quite a scam going with this charge. Speeding, yes. Reckless driving, No.

I actually made the drive through Virginia on my way to NC and back last weekend, and kept my radar detector on to avoid police. I'd much rather have a no point equipment violation on a radar detector than a speeding ticket and it came in handy a couple of times
