So when I was originally shopping for cars, I test drove BMW, Audi, Merc, and every other car in the same range. What helped me decide on the BMW was how the 335i e93 hugged the road during the winds and turns, and there was never a point where I felt uncomfortable with the speed I was going.

Fast forward a few months later, and I now own a 2011 335d. I have sport suspension, Miro 111 19" wheels w/ Hankook V12 tires with only 2500 miles on them. Tire pressure is 35F 42R, per the pressure listed on the door. I wouldn't say I'm a super aggressive driver, but I have noticed that on freeway ramps with long curves, my back tires seem to slip a little, at least to the point where I have to let off on the throttle. I understand that the 335d's torque tends to slip the wheels sometimes, but is this something that should be happening? Is there something I can change to prevent this kind of slipping in the future?

When it's time to replace the tires, get Pilot Super Sports. They're about as good as you can get for Max Perf summer.

Either that, or use a bit less throttle if you stick with the Ventus.

Your tire pressure sounds high for < 100 mph driving. take another look perhaps?

That's surprising to hear -- from what I heard, the ventus are good tires for the money; unless I'm somehow driving way faster than the average bmw driver (and not realizing it), this seems like a major problem with the tires if it has traction problems on a highway ramp. I still have my OEM Bridgestones RFTs -- would they provide better traction, or am I stuck with the ventus for the next 30k miles?

Just ran outside and rechecked the pressures -- yep, it's what BMW listed on the door jamb per my 18" sport package...

I guess what I'm wondering is, is this a problem that's specific to diesels b/c of our higher torque, and the car would not have slipped if i was in a 335i? If that's the case, then I can settle with the need for higher traction tires. I'm just concerned that there's some other variable besides the engine that I need to account for. I can drop the psi below the recommended amount on the door jamb (for more traction), but every case I've come across re: psi seems to say I should increase it slightly when going 18" -> 19".

I would say between 35-40mph, nothing too crazy. The degree of the turn was not too harsh either; I believe my original test drive of 335i e93 had the sport package, and I took a turn way sharper and faster during the test drive with no slip whatsoever.

Thats about same speed I take and I never felt except for once when I was accelerating on turn and it was raining hard. I take this particular turn everyday and felt rain and my low thread are reasons for slight slip.

I don't have that problem, and I'll take most onramps at a more aggressive clip than you are. I have Hankooks, as well, but I have the RS-3's instead, and I find them a very capable tire at temps.

Are you running 42 cold in the rear tires? That is too high IMO

Hankook V12's are your problem. Great when you are driving slow/unagressive, but with the torque this car has, im sure you'll light them up very easily.

Get some real tires for your BMW! I have the Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my e46 m3 and they are absolutely great.

For HPDE, I run the Hankook RS3's- but they are overkill for street (and probly not that great in cold weather).

Hi guys, thanks for all the replies! Been on vacation, so didn't get a chance to respond for a while. Yeah i think i may have to splurge on some super sports once i finish the tread on the Hankooks; I figure at 20-30k miles it's not *too* big of an expense since i'll be able to enjoy it for a while. I'm starting to learn how to ease into turns a bit better and maintain the traction, so that helps a lot. I love how the more I drive this car the more power i can push it, and it just keeps goin'! Going to wait till 10k miles or so, then probably pop a JBD in it to lose some traction again

Regarding the psi -- according to my official sticker in the door jamb, it's supposed to be 35F 42R. This is for a 2011 335d. Did BMW make a mistake?

I thought pressure was 35/42 as well; but that applies to the 17" RFT!

I had my 19" wheels rebalanced and they were all set to 32psi. Rides much better and less squealing.
