Driving Thru Oregon & Washington - What to see/ where to eat/ what to do

As the title suggests, my gf and I are driving from Alberta, through BC, Washington, Oregon and into northern California and returning back. Trip will be 7-10 days.

So, where should we drive? I know of the Redwood Forest...

Where to eat? (cite Diners, Drive-ins and Dives or even places like Chicago's Moto restaurant)

Where should we go?

What's worth visiting?

Should I put my winter tires on? We're coming through Nov ~7-13

Thanks in advance! I really appreciate all your help in making this experience memorable!

You're definitely making a longer drive than I have up/down this coast, but I've made the WA to CA drive several times, especially in the last few years. I'll post more suggestions later, but here's something:

Not sure if you know of Harry&David, the mail-order company where you can get those snacks and fruits. Their headquarters is in Medford, just a little north of the OR/CA border.

Medford:
Country Village
1314 Center DR
Medford, OR 97501
(541) 864-2278
Mon - Sat: 9am - 8pm
Sun: 9am - 7pm
>Get Directions

Their Royal Riviera pears are in season now and you can get them at a pretty good discount going to their country store. They're even cheaper if you don't buy them in the box and just grab them off the display (just like a regular grocery store) and eat them on the road or buy for friends/family who you might be visiting.

That's a place I always stop by.

In Portland, you can swing by Voodoo Donut. They have 2 locations and are open 24/7. I personally only need to get ONE per visit ==> maple bacon bar a la Tony Boudain.

Not sure where in CA you're going, but I have a few rec's there as well. What kind of stuff are you interested in? Where do you plan on staying overnight etc etc?

Weather should be OK, but there's always that chance of snow in the passes just south of Medford (OR/CA border) and in the Shasta mountain range.

I don't know how far south you plan on going but there's this Diner in Big Sur, CA that has some pretty good food. Its next door to a little Lodge and has an awesome view and the people are extremely nice!

at any rate... DRIVE THE CA-1!!!

I used to drive down toSF for thanksgiving. Always hit snow on the Oregon Cali border. It's a mountain pass that would suck on summer tires.. Be careful! There are some decent outlet malls without sales tax near Eugene oregon. Check out the beach near the redwood park in norcal

Great responses! Thanks guys.

Day 1/2 will be travelling to Seattle and spending time there.

Day 3/4 driving thru rest of Washington and Oregon. Stopping at a microbrewery or 2 Does anyone have any microbrewery recommendations along the coast?

Day 5/6/7 spending in San Francisco. We really wanted to do Six Flags but it's closed that weekend We'll do the stereotypical things like Golden Gate bridge and park, Alcatraz, Chinatown, Wharf, etc

As for food, I love high dining as well as hole-in-the-wall diners as soon on "Diners, Drive-ins & Dives!"

Fun drive

We did this drive when we brought the wife's M up from SoCal a few years ago. Quite fun. It's about central Oregon, off I5. I think there's enough detail there for you to find it on a map.

If you hit the pass mentioned above during a "normal" day, the snow will be gone. However, this next week the snow level will hit 2000 feet. Winter tires will make for a more enjoyable trip with no worries. The PCH is a great drive and Cannon Beach OR would be a nice stop.

For Seattle, you should hit Beth's Cafe, Red Mill Burger and Top Pot Doughnuts. If you have time, you should also do the Seattle Underground Tour. It's really awesome and tells you who built Seattle financially.
