Question Considering a 335i coupe. Need some help.

Hey guys. Im looking at getting a 2007 335i coupe with an auto. I have been doing some research and I know there has been numerous updates to the car's software and an HPFP recall. My question is, has the latest N54 software from BMW completely fixed the lag and wastegate problems that I have heard about? Also has the recall about a year ago fixed the HPFP problem? I know that there are 2 kinds of "ecu's," MSD80 and MSD81. I also know that cars with a sept 07 and above build date won't have the wastegate problem and that BMW came out with an ISTA/P2.32.1 update that was supposed to fix the lag issue. The more I about the issues the more confused I get. Sorry about the BIG TIME NOOB questions but all these issues are making me feel like jumping ship and getting a G37, and I really want a BMW!

Thanks in advance.

Bmw has extended the warranty on the fuel pumps for either 10 years or 120k miles. For the most part they will even honor the extension if your modded because it happens on stock cars all the time. But if this really worries you just jump ship.

It's all a crap shoot. I have an 07 built in April 2007 that hasn't had a single issue (not including a couple burned out tail lights and a moonroof voltage issue). I've never had the software updated, it's been tuned since 700 miles, and it has never needed a dealer visit.

knock on wood.

Edit - I would much rather buy an 07 with no dealer visit history than someone who has had to take their car in a half a dozen times.

There have been at least 5 versions of the fuel pump and I don't think any of them is a complete fix:

No. Description Supplement Qty From Up To Part Number Price Notes Photo
01 High-pressure pump 1 12/2009 13517592881 ENDED
01 High-pressure pump 1 12/2009 13517596123 ENDED
01 High-pressure pump 1 05/2010 13517594943 ENDED
01 Exchange high-pressure pump 1 12/2010 13517613933 ENDED

Ive heard about the HPFP warranty but wasnt the recall supposed to replace the part or software so that there are no more failures?

Nah they just replace the pump with the same style pump that comes out. I wouldent worry about it man but, it can be an inconvenience. Like stated above its a crap shoot. Some cars have like 5 pumps replaced and others have had none replaced. I bought my 09 used and the carfax said its first pump was replaced at 11k miles and was replaced again 24k. I have not had any issues with it as of yet but ive only put about 1000 miles on it since ive owned it. I own 3 cars so if it ever has to go into the shop its no big deal. It all depends on what you are looking for in a car. I wanted a car that was fast, and easy to extract major power out of it at a low cost. That why i went with the 335i. The G37 is a great car as well, but if you want major power out of it, its gonna cost. But if your not into modding and are satisfied with your car in stock form, buy the g37. They are far more reliable and are just as fast stock for stock as a 335i. In the end of the day ur gonna have to pay to play with either choice so just go big.

Yeah the HPFP is definitely not one of my biggest concerns since i have a BMW dealer about a half mile from my house. I can practically push the car to the dealer lol. But you're right, it sounds like a annoying problem more than anything

What about the lag and wastegate problem? Has that finally been resolved by BMW?

A lot of tunes will compensate for the lag. As far as the HPFP goes, its a crapshoot.

I dont plan to mod my car. Im talking about the lag that was caused by the V29.2 update and whether that was fixed or not. Thanks.

If not modding, get something that does not have a forced induction system and all the headaches that come with it (not to mention the HPFP, and direct injection). Whether the g37 or a 328. Modding this platform is where all the fun is.

Get a car you won't need to mod, aka, M3 or M5.

Am I right to assume you haven't taken a test drive with a 335i and G37 back to back?

The G37 is a great car, handled great a had tons of power. e90 330i was even better but a little lacking in a straight line. So im assuming the 335i is just like the 330i except that it hauls ass on the straights. As far as modding goes, the only thing I'd want to do is get the $600 BMW performance power kit. I didnt really consider it a mod compared to some of the members' cars And yeah i know JB is a much cheaper and more effective solution but I dont want the increased fuel consumption and bugs that come with it. Plus i can probably get the BMW power kit installed for free. My uncle is a BMW technician.

Sorry to be a pain in the ass but no one really answered my question, even though i appreciate all of the responses. Was the lag that was caused by v29.2 ever resolved (assuming all stock engine)? And was the wastegate rattle ever fixed?

Short answer the lag and WG issue: No.
Im gonna look like a prick but IDC: honestly a G37 is just a nissan. Reliable? Yes. The same excitement to drive? FUCK NO. The reason to buy a car like this is excitement. If you don't wan't excitement buy a lexus. IMHO these cars should only be sold in 6spd manuals and tuned. BTW, the cobb accesport plugs into the OBD2 port and 15 minutes later you good to go. No real "modding" needed.

Can't answer the 29.2 problem, since I never got to that level. The waste gate issues are hardware related and there has not been a stock redesign to my knowledge. Fixes or patches have all been on the software side, mostly from 3rd party tuners.

Rob Beck did and internal wastegate component re-design, and Forge did an external actuator re-design.

Here is Rob's take (first part is about the Forge Actuator upgrade):

This is a different animal than traditional spring actuators where spring strength directly controls the seal of the flapper on the wastegate, and also what predetermines what psi the flappers open at.

I also believe there are alot of people who are confused about what wastegate actuators are vs. what internal wastegate components are. The big problem with our turbos is premature wear in the internal wastegate components. Those are what I have completely overhauled. It adds alot of time and expense to the upgrade. Actuators alone will not fix sloppy worn out internal components, but they could help bandaid them. They may also help confuse customers into believing that their internal wastegate components have been overhauled, when in reality they just have a different new wastegate actuator.

Thanks. Do you have any problems with wastegate rattling?

There is some mostly on deceleration, and some just when coming out of vacuum to boost, but it's nothing at the level to need a fix in my opinion. I'm also running a tune that does some modification, but even before the tune had a fix it was not much different on my car.

I'm looking forward to see the difference when I get Rob's turbo upgrade installed sometime very soon.

I have an '07 coupe and although I had an injector bank go out, the dealer also replaced the HPFP when they did the injector bank just to include all the updated programming. They also did the plugs and a few coil packs under maint so no out of pocket. The dealership I go to treats me like a rock star and I also leave my mods on. First thing they see is the meth pump and dual cone intake when they open the hood. The techs all think that its cool because they only get to work on stock BMW's, but most of them drive modified cars. I'm sure the G37 is a nice ride, but it's not a BMW! If you want a BMW, buy a BMW and don't waste your time with a G37. Part of the pride of ownership is knowing you have the real deal, not some wan-a-be sports car. When you are comfortable with the car, spend a few hundred dollars and get a tune. Even if you just go for a mild COBB tune, it will be like driving the car for the first time again. So stop wasting your time and our time and go buy the BMW and join the club. I take pride in ownership and most of the people who post on this board may not all agree on who has the best tune, but we all agree we have the best cars in the world.

So basically I am assuming that ppl with pre 09/07 built cars have to choose between 1) no lag and wastegate rattle OR 2) lag and no wastegate rattle.

Am I correct on this? or has BMW ever released a software update that has no lag and no rattle? (pre 09/07 cars)

I just purchased an early 07 build E92, I was aware of the waste gate rattle issues but honestly haven't heard anything that is that pronounced. I really think this issue is blown WAY out of proportion. Just go test drive a 335, see if you notice it. The speed on this car is intoxicating.
