On the Fence, LSD, Geiken or Wavetrac

Finally going to do the LSD. I'm on the fence between the Wavetrack (Torsen) and the OS Geiken (clutch). I've always had a clutch LSD I think... Supra's OEM LSD, F250 LSD, Corvette LSD etc... I think I want to go the OS Geiken route. I want a LSD Comparible to the ones I had above in prevoius cars. Opinions?

Also, who is a good vendor to sell and install these into my diff? I have a bolted ring gear. I can pull the member and ship it out. But I want to keep my diff.

OS Giken no questions asked! Torsen diffs require torque to be transmitted by the driveshaft in order to lock. Otherwise they act as an open diff. Same thing happens under deceleration: open diff action. Wavetrack is slightly better in this regard as they claim that it will lock even if one 1 is off the ground. However, we are yet to see the long-term reliability of those units since they are a newcomer.

OS Giken have been selling diffs for over a decade and they claim that so far not one has ever needed to be serviced. Their diffs lock under deceleration and under zero traction conditions as well.

Guess what I am getting this coming spring!

I can see that. Turner motorsports offers them. Who is another Vendor for the Geiken's? What were my cars above, torsen or clutch? Edit, looks like my Supra's were Clutch type LSD's from the factory. Hence why they made a lot of noise after 20+yrs/200K miles. Deffinately leaning toward the Geiken. Just need to find a local shop for install or a very reptuable one and ship my diff out. I'd prefer to watch the gear install locally. I'm asking my dealer, see what they say.

Hit up Harold@HPA. He is the man to talk to. Depending on the year and transmission type, there are different options for LSD. The most expensive option is for late 2007+ 6MT cars.

You may also give diffsonline.com a call. I know a few guys with OS Giken and they got theirs from diffsonline.

EDIT:

You may also consider differential cooling plate for the LSD if you intend on taking the car to the track often. VAC Motorsports and HPAshop offer one.

Is this still a $5k+ upgrade for 6MT people (I am 2008 and VIN confirmed as welded)

No. I got a quote for $4,500 which includes a $1,600 core charge. You'll need to pay for install labor and new diff fluid. ...but yeah, it is expensive... I have welded final gear.

wow, $4500... if the LSD is that much difference that Wavetrac, then I would say 2 things:

1) what do you want to do with the car - how much tracking?
2) you think you are going to notice that much difference? (Wavetrac and clutch type)?
3) if you are going to that point, I would expect you would have ALL the bits and pieces first or you may negate any benefit.

What is your goal?

All good points, no doubt! I did a lot of thinking on that one as well.

I intend on keeping the car for a very long time. Even if 2-3 years down the line I get a new one, I'll just gut this one completely and turn it into a track toy. I want to start with the best possible parts that are currently available. I don't want to redo things. I learned my lesson from my last car.

I chose a clutch-type LSD (Drexler) and the car rides like 100% stock, no noises ever. I'm very happy with it, I like mods that don't have side effects

But if you don't need every ounce of performance I think a Wavertrac LSD would be sufficient, provided it is correctly installed.

i wouldnt think so. isnt the quaife better than the wavetrac also?

IMO it would have to be a SERIOUS track car to warrant the OS over an existing quaife unless you have money to blow and have already upgraded everything else suspension wise that could benefit more

Wavetrac claims better performance with one wheel off the ground or something... I don't know. The OSG is definitely an amazing diff, but you gotta pay to play with that one.

What about the Drexler? I can't find any info on it on the net. Who is selling them and what price range are they going for vs the OSG?

The only time I have 1 wheel is the ground is when I ride my R6. I don't corner to the point of having wheels in the air. Lol

Drexler supplies LSD for BMW Motorsports cars. They are excellent diffs. If my memory serves me right, they have less clutch plates (8-10) compared to OSG which has over 20. This makes for longer life with OSG. I've not seen a US supplier for Drexler diffs though.

Then there's Dinan, which is also a Torsen type diff. I've heard people say that Dinan is just a rebranded Quaife, but this needs to be confirmed..

So it's get a OSG from turner, which is still cheaper than a Dinan. Or buy a Quafie/Wavetrac from a handfull of vendors.

Before spending the money to upgrage to the OSG, you should ask yourself if you will be turning the car into a track car. If not then 99.9 percent of the people will not be able to notice the differnce btwn something like a wavetrac and osg.
