3-Series Navigation - I am lost!
Unfortunately I can't stand this navigation system. Sadly it is the worst I have ever used. Can't even find major streets in city where we live. Sends me on long strange detours. I have complained to BMW North America Customer Service as well as to my local dealer. Just running around in circles. My 2007 X5 navigation works like a charm! When I drive our 2009 335d I use my iPhone GPS to get from point A to B. BMW advised me to upgrade to new software to the tune of $450. Said no thank you! I paid hefty money for this option so I want to have a functioning system! I bought this car new and this navigation system has never worked correctly. It is clearly malfunctioning and is of sub-standard quality. Not what I expected from my favorite car manufacturer. Utterly disappointing. I paid good money for this option and it never worked and the manufacturer takes no responsibility. So much for warranty! Any good advice as to how to upgrade or fix this mess without having to pay a hefty amount for something that should have been functioning in the first place? HEEELP!

Man that sucks! I was going to say, the nav on mine is great! Possibly the best I have ever used. But, mine is an 07.
On fixing yours, could it be something in the routing settings? Maybe you can look at the settings in your 07 x5 and make the ones in your 335 the same?

I just bought a 2012 3 series w/ Nav. and i find it for superior than my 2008 Nav.
They loaded the latest mapping which just came out in Nov. so it is the newest software to date. It is a shame to now pay so much for updating the the system thru the dealer. No other solutions out there right now. I plan on doing it every 2 years on my 2012. PM me if you want a copy of the newest DVD for your X5. |

I agree the new hard-drive based navigation is not great. Even the nav on my 2011 does not locate some desinations, esp when I try to enter them under category search, e.g. a major hotel/conference center at a major state university. While at the same time, the nav in my dad's lexus es350 has it in the data base.
From what I hear BMW contracted with a satellite/nav/data company which provides all of the information stored in your nav. This company (whose name escapes me at the moment,,, Tele...something) has a poor reputation in the industry of supplying outdated data i.e. maps etc by comparison with some other companies out there that supply map data to companies like Garmin, which is why a cheap portable Garmin will almost always have the destination if your BMW nav does not. Updates for the hard-drive based nav are also only available every 2 yrs or so where by comparison the DVD based system updates are available every year. |

Do tell more......
We'll, when I bought this 335d I had actually paid for a new Mercedes E-350 Bluetech (Diesel). Did not really like it and BMW wanted to sell me the 335d so I went back the following day the Mercedes dealer, returned the E-350 and pulled the check and went to BMW and picked up the 335d. I reminded them of my loyalty and they agreed to be nice to me and chip in some money for the upgrade. I have been a loyal buyer of beemers from this dealer for a while. On my third X5 now. Other half driving the 335d. Son just flipped his X3 and landed on the roof. Car totalled but he is fine (decided he can wait for a new car now until college is over). Daughter eying a 328i now. So they better be nice to me.... |

So they are upgrading the navigation software? What version do you have and what year is the 335d?

Separately, when using the iPhone and Google maps: does anyone know how to send an address / destination to BMW assist? I cannot see the "Send." I have tried going to Safari on the iPhone (maps.google.com) but it still detects I'm using my iPhone / mobile device. http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...MyInfoFAQ.aspx |

the 335d is a 2009. Need to check version of Navi. Don't know off hand which version it is but for sure the original from 2009 as I have done nothing. Wife came home tonight upset again as it sent her the wrong way. Frustrating....

You can't send maps/messages to your BMW from your iphone. It must be from a computer.

Navi upgraded on the2009 - 335d and a 2011 DVD received and in use on the 2007 - X5. Both working well so far! Will put it to test over the weekend as long day trip is planned. I have no worries about the X5 but we shall test the 335d and see if the dealer upgrade did the trick. More to follow....
Thank you all for your comments and support! And thanks for the DVD!!! TJ |
