Castrol Edge 5w40 is now BMW LL01 approved AND available in stores! Previously all that was available (stateside) was Mobile 1 Euro 0w40, some phantom Castrol Euro 0w40 and the BMW stuff. The front said "For BMW, Mercedes, and Audi." The Pickerington, OH Auto Zone had it on the shelf. It's not online yet.

Hip-hop-horray-ho for more oil options.

How much would you bet that the formula didn't change, and they just added "BMW approved". If you look up the approval rating system, BMW's tech sheet state any synthetic with an API rating of SM or higher is approved. Looking on the labels of all the full synthics at the local napa, they are all within those guidelines. API website says SM is the highest quality, but recently an SN level was just approved. Sounds like more marketing ploy to me. BTW, I use only Royal Purple.

I doubt formula changed, they probably paid to get that stamp.

And that stamp is all that's required to keep my CPO status intact.

I like the German made 0-30 European formula, aka German Castrol. Just added 15 quarts to my stash thru Autozone's last sale for less than $5 bucks a quart! The deal also included Bosch oil filters for another car.

I'm assuming they make 5W40 like the OEM oil?

You'd have to check the flyers or the website. They put it on sale periodically, usually 5 quarts and a premium oil filter package.

IIRC that grade always said and and on the back it said LL98. Glad they finally updated the product. (Confirmed via PDS)

Good news! I wonder when it will be updated on the BMW USA site for approved oils. Currently it only shows German Castrol 0w30 as the Castrol oil of choice.

Isn't the BMW oil just rebadged German castrol? I get it for $6.20 a quart at the dealer...better than $8+ at local stores for Mobil one or other approved brands.

Nope GC is 0w30. BMW dealer oil is 5w30. It has been rumored to be Castrol TXT.

Yeah, in the US, the BMW oil is Castrol TXT Softec (Group III). Not bad stuff. The European dealers still use it in older cars; the new cars get Castrol SLX 0W30 (Group IV) which is BMWLL04.
