Can't Mount Non-Runflats on OEM 161 wheel?

I was told by my service advisor that I cannot mount tires that are not run-flats on the OEM wheels for my 08 328. She told me it was a safety issue, wheel was designed for runflats and non-runflats could "slip off".

Has anyone heard this before? Does anyone know that it is true?

(Don't tell me that you have done it, that doesn't mean it is safe.)

Total nonsense - she's got it bass-ackwards. While you cannot mount RFTs on some "non-RFT" wheels as they don't have the proper ridges to hold the RFTs in place, if a rim is designed for RFTs, it will hold a nonRFT. Like many others, I've run non-RFTs on two different BMWs with no problems whatsoever - except for a heavier wallet.

But the larger question is why you would go to a BMW dealer for tires. The majority of them will tell you that (1) a RFT cannot be repaired, and (2) A non-RFT cannot be mounted on a late model BMW for safety (or handling) reasons. Plus their prices are generally much, much higher than Tire Rack or a good local tire shop.

Garage List
My service adviser told me that many customers switch to non-RFTs because they don't like the harshness of the RFTs. I don't think he would state that if there was such a real safety hazard with that practice.
