Oil consumption issue

Hello guys!

Has anyone got the oil consumption issue here?
According to reports in my region, many car owners noticed that the oil kept reducing while driving. A latest report said that 1/6 oil (gap between min and max) consumed during 980KM. Is it normal?
As a matter of fact, this is (no 'one of') the biggest issue I've been worrying about before and after purchase my bmw, because I've heard the oil consumption rumor long time ago.

Pls comment, many thanks!

In my opinion consumption is related to how the engine was broken in while new and the type of oil.used. Typically car companies consider 1quart/liter per 1k miles as acceptable. Silly I know.

The oil I mentioned is "engine oil", or "motor oil", or "lubricating oil", not the gas, or gasoline. Maybe I didn't express clearly.

Thanks for your attention.

Thanks for the explanation! It's just like what the 4S sales told me: oil consumption is sometimes necessary and acceptable.
However, many car owners here(including me) don't think so. The oil is used to lubricate and heat output, and it's kept in a sealed space. So, it shouldn't be consumed while the engine is running normally.
Here is another example. My other car, a citroen ZX, bought in 2002, equiped with an old 1.6L 4cylinder engine, TU5JPK, used nearly 10 years, has never consumed a single drop of oil. And such happened in many cars.
Does anyone have any further explanation? Pls advise.

Wow, if I did that I would be 3.5 liters overfull by my normal 12,000km change!

Are you checking your oil levels - or just blindly adding oil?

That's almsot 1L per 1000km. I think the minimum acceptable is 1L per 1400km. That's a lot of oil. It might not be consuming it, but leaking it instead. I had a pretty massive oil leak from a broken PCV (crank case vent) line. There was oil ALL OVER the engine bay. Get you car checked out for major oil leaks.

Garage List
Oil consumption after I bought my 330i was about 6400 km and then a 1 ltr added. Last time around it was 8100 km and another 1 ltr added, so a bit better...
