JB4 Install

Hey guys before anything I just want to say I have done tons of reading and searching about the JB4 and still have a quick question.

How long does a JB4 take to install and is it hard? I am new to this and am interested in the JB4 but worried about the install. I am considering getting the Cobb AP just for the ease of use.

Any information would be great. Thanks!

JB4 is easy to install and should take probably 30 minutes, may be less...

Of course it doesn't compare to COBB's ease of install

Edit: Meant to say EASY to install

The JB4 will require you to access your ECU box in order to install the piggy back system into the car. You can check out the JB4 installation guide and you're comfortable with doing the install yourself. Remember, you'll have to repeat this every time you want to pay a visit to the dealer as well.

The Cobb AccessPORT is a flash tuner and is much easier to install/uninstall. The process is fairly simple and you can literally leave it in the car while it does it's own thing!

As long as you follow the instructions you will be fine. It takes like 30-40 mins if its your first time. Totally worth it though. If you don't want to go through all that you can also get a Cobb tune which is much easier to install.

Not hard to install at all. If it's your first time then around 30 minutes is right because people are usually being extra careful but if you've done it before it doesn't take nearly as long. Takes me five minutes to install or uninstall (pnp version). If your talking about the pinout then it will take longer. By the time the cobb flashes the car it ends up being the same amount of time. If your talking about just pure physical install then yes of course the cobb is easier, you just plug it in.

Super easy, watch the video as you do it. Should take less than 30 min for the first install and 10 min after that.

Thanks for all the replies! I think I will probably go with the Cobb just for ease of use and in case I have to go to the dealer, will leave me with a better piece of mind being able to uninstall it so quickly.

With that being said, anyone have one for sale? I do not want to pay full price for a new one.

You'll probably be able to find a used JB4 much easier than a used Cobb unit....

Obviously the Cobb will be easier to install but its all relative...the cobb new is more expensive. YOu should be able to pick up a used JB4 for like $350-$400

I meant to say easy but typed Hard!

What I wanted to say it's time consuming but not hard!

I'm actually expecting to get mine soon to run along COBB to get some of its cool features

Yeah I understood what you meant! If I can find a decently priced Cobb I am going to get that and a BMS DCI

I think one day I might make a video of a new customer installing a Cobb flash and me installing a piggyback, I bet I beat him. Only differences is he will be sipping on some tea and crumpets. See Pm OP.

I love the features of a piggyback, but installing is a bit of a bitch.
My power pin is getting really weak and Ill have to fix that soon like many others have.
If you take your time youll never have a problem, rushing things may cause a problem.

Can't go wrong with either... however, what sold me on the Cobb was the ease of install and will never go bad unless you break the hand held Accessport (I always leave my accessport in a safe box tucked away in my closet).

The JB4 install takes around 45 min the first time, but only 15 minutes the second time around. It isn't too bad. In addition to the lower price point and many extra features (startup gauge sweep, in dash gauges, shift light, maxcool, canflap, etc) you can also enable/disable it on the fly. Most set to map 0 for basic oil changes and only remove for warranty claims. Also keep in mind a piggyback is the only way to guarantee nothing is recorded in the DME. Codes stored on a flash tune will contain the true boost target values which can cause problems if you ever have some really serious problem and BMW decides to interrogate your DME.

I think you would be happier with the Cobb, as I personally feel that it has more to offer with the ability to Log, Read codes etc right on the AP. (no need for a laptop)

Of course you are paying for this.

Yeah I think it is worth the price though. If I ever have problems with the car and need to take it in, I can uninstall the software and they will never know, correct?
