its plastick like the shift knob material. It is easy to install all you need to do is take off the old one and cut the tab off then get a new tab to replace the old one and thats it. Its like a twist tie.

Go to the DIY section and search for M brake handle.
I posted a DIY for that and the M shifter. the process is the same.

very easy procedure.

When I order from the dealership. They call that chrome. But the actual color is same as the 6MT Knob

Dealer list price is $75. On the BMW official 3 series part catalog, they misprinted it at $45.

The cheapest place I found this was at Crown Auto for $58.50 + shipping which should not be that much... So $65.00 shipped for this part is just a fair deal... but much cheaper than walking into a dealership

I got mine from weatherford bmw, california, for free. but the accessories shows $45 when my sa asked me which gift i want, $50 gift card or the handbrake handle. as seller stated, they might misprint on catalog, which means I picked a right gift, hahahaha.
