Returning 48.7MPG!! + Hidden Menu Instrument Test

Just returned from a 500 mile roundtrip to London and back, including stop/go city centre driving and a traffic jam and I'm getting 48.7MPG! Properly impressed and amazed with this car, shame it has to go soon . Was just playing around with my hidden menu instrument test too:

I'm assuming imperial gallons here. Also 913 miles on one tank? How did you managed that in a 335d?!

Yep, I always feel large, more powerful engines are more economical than small ones because you don't have to work them as hard. The N57 motors to N47 are a prime example as we can almost dump the clutch from stationary and not stall with all the torque! Obviously, the 35i is going to be more economical than a W16 Bentley Continental but its really how you drive it, not what you drive. The impressive thing is, I wasn't even trying for economy on this run - it gets booted! :P On an eco run, this engine would return some serious MPG but I can't take the boredom, especially when the world best production diesel is sat up front.

Newbie here, returning 39.1, 39.9 and 40.7 mpg respectively, not from fuel computer but from actual litres to miles done fill-up to empty. That's driving to work in morning on motorway averaging 60 mph, then driving like I stole it on the way home (40 mile per day round trip).

If the OP was driving a 320d his numbers would have been much higher. Comparing any one person's driving conditions to standard test cycle is apples/oranges.

I can't fathom what driving conditions would give me 900+ miles on a tank though... maybe driving downhill the whole way while drafting a semi truck??

Or maybe that's km and not miles?

I was referring to the 913 miles from a 335d.

The OP drives a 330d as I do. I know how economical they are. I also know how economical the 320d ed is and the 335d as my family all drive BMW diesels.

I bet I couldn't get much more if I didn't change my style. The 330d isn't "hammered" but its power and mostly torque is utilised! Although that said, it isn't driven like a granny - the 4k mark isn't lonely. When driving a 320d or even a 118d, I had to use much more revs and really work it a hell of a lot harder. My 330d goes through towns on tickover! Then when I'm fanciful, it goes like bloody hell! On a motorway, the 320ED should win hands down but I would constantly be conscious of MPG and be on a nervous Eco Run. No fun. I get hyper miles from the 30d without even trying! I wonder if a 7th or 8th gear would make it even better still.

So is diesel in UK mixed with ethanol.... In new York I believe we have a 10% mix. For what I understand it helps emissions but takes away from Mpg... And do you have higher octane rating ie 50? In NYC its 40

123, that's pretty good mileage, especially for 'getting into it' a wee bit. I hope the F30 meets your expectations -- already its economy rating has been downgraded in the US from 36 to 33 mpg(US) on the hwy.

Most I've had on a tank was a shade over 630mi before filling, but the computer said I could have gotten to 700mi before dry tanks...not that I wuld trust it 100%...

Cheers
D.

I haven't a clue to be honest with you. I'll have a look next time I hit the pumps. Which may be a long time! ;D

33 is only 1 more mpg than I was getting with my E34 6-speed 540i...did you test drive one? What was the steering like?

Cheers

Highest I have gotten so far in 9900 miles is 35 mpg over a tank. Drive from Salt Lake to Las Vegas. But there is quite a bit of ups and downs.

You more than double my '73 440 Charger...6 mpg, 7 on a good day. That, and you're driving an M5!
