Please help with my too quick decision
While looking for a set of wheels to replace the 16" style 282's that came with my '09 328, I found a deal I now think I should have passed up.
I came across a set of style 116's off of an '07 550, TPMS included. After a quick check I found 116's were an option on '09 335's, so I figured they had to fit. I used the calculator at the top of this section and they seemed close enough, so I went for the deal. Today, at the tire shop I was told they won't fit because of the different offset. They told me the same style wheels came in both 20 and 30 something offset for both the 5 and 3 series. They also said the TPMS was incompatible. Are they correct? If so what is the correct offset range that will work? I had to make a quick decision. I figured if they wouldn't fit, I would just resell them and look for the right size. Thanks |

They are 7.5et20 which is about the same as 8.5 et33 or 9.5 et45
Most people do 8.5 et30-35 in the front and 9.5et30-35 in the rear. They will fit no problem you can add a 15mm spacer in the rear. The tires are a little taller but they will work and your speedometer will actually be a little more accurate with the taller tires. I have no idea on the tpms. Edit- looks like the 07 550 uses the same tpms as the 09 328 so you should be good might want to wait fit someone to confirm. |

Hmm... From my experience, BMW changed their TPMS sensors in 08. Since the sensors or an 07 and your car is an 09, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't work. 5-series no Xi uses very low offsets, in the 20's, while the 3-series will use offsets around the 30's.

Thanks for the help. I decided to give them a try.
The TPMS works fine. The rear wheels seem like a good fit. The fronts are pretty tight though. I checked the clearance throughout the steering range. There is as little as 1/4 inch clearance at the rear of the tire with the wheels turned about half way. There's about 3/4 to an inch normally. The test drive seemed ok. I took a dip in the road at a pretty fast speed to get the car to push down on the suspension and got a slight rub on the front of the left wheel well. The current tires on the new wheels are 225/50 17. The correct tire would be a225/45 17, giving me more clearance. Am I trying to fit a square peg in a round hole? Should I sell what I have and get different wheels? Thanks for the help. |
