Pre Bimmerfest detail session, perfecting the paint

Getting ready for Bimmerfest, given me a reason to continue messing with the car during this heat.

Hope to see a bunch of you there. Anyone heading to the big drag rental on the 23rd at MIR? Should be some fantastic stuff there.

================================================== =======

I'm going to give the car a full polish with PO85RD and then OPTI-COAT treatment. The paint is in pretty damned good condition for a 14 year old car thanks to constant pampering and several hardcored detail sessions over the past few years.

There are several areas that are bugging me so i'm going to concentrate on the little details. Wax build up in certain areas etc.

I pulled the hoodliner and the washer nozzles.

you can see the residue from a wet sanding session that built up and couldnt be removed. I'm going to tackle this for sure.

Paint condition before I started, not bad

All trim is removed

Out in the all telling sun

RIDS, not bad though

RIDS and a few water spots etched into the clear

Dodo Supernatural still beading pretty well

CG citrus stripping the wax

my helper got home from camp, saw me washing the car and immediately went and got her bathing suit on, she loves to get sprayed by the hose

Fully washed

My support crew, one went on a beer run, the other just giggled and wanted to get involved

leaf blower fun

Tucked back away until later tomorrow most likely when i'll start claying and paint prep for polishing. The M3 wont leave the garage now until its done.

After wax stripped, pretty good! This shouldnt take much buffer work

Got a little bit more done today. Finished polishing the hood.

here is the new wash mitt, Rethickulous.

looks like a Russian's hat

Polished the entire hood with Menzerna SIP with a yellow pad, then 85RD on a black pad to jewel it up a touch.

Done!

Now the real test

2 different test sections on the hood......perfect!

a quick video showing how it looks. Best the paint has ever been, will wipe down with ISP then probably 2 coats of opti-coat.

Had 2 appointments cancel on me today so done by 11am. Back to work on the car.

Hit the whole car minus the hood with M105 in spots, followed by SIP on the entire car minus hood. Then followed by 106ff ceramic polish to finish it off. I'd be happy to give it to ANYONE at this condition but i'm going for broke on this one.

Trunk just above the tailight on drive side. some of the worst scratches on the car but in reality they were very minor.

Fixed

Top of trunk lid

Roof

Passenger rear fender

done for the day, next up is 85RD on the entire car with a black pad then Opti-coat

I think I finally finished polishing the car with 85RD on all paint surfaces, took my time and over a week to complete but i'm in no rush.

I have not washed it yet to remove the polishing oils/dust/etc prior to Opti-Coat but wanted to take it out into the sun to see the real condition of the paint.

I was very pleasantly surprised

See here, camera kept changing lighting due to the direct sun but you get the idea.....the rear trunk/spoiler section was badass to see

and still shots of a few areas, I'll save the rest until I clean it all up, polish the metal bits, clean the wheels, opti-coat everything, clean the engine bay, detail the interior. Then i'll take final pics, by then it will probably be time for the drag rental at MIR on the 23rd....hope to see a bunch of you there!!!

Rear passenger fender area

Hood up

5 suns

Roof

Dang your eye for detail is awesome. The car is looking amazing. Does that russian hat wash mit work very well? I just use an old wash cloth :/

^ lol at your sig .gif, that f'n hilarious.

yeah i'm a detail bandit, all the little things add up. You'll never see all the little things i did but the sum makes it worth it.

the new wash mitt should work great.

DO NOT use a cloth on your paint. Use at bare minimum a microfiber wash mitt.

washing is literally the worst thing you can do to your paint...adds the most scratches. So you need to be careful.

Mine sleeps in the garage, but the gopher has to poke its head and back in to give me room on the other side to work. I wish I was able to work on the car little by little when I want. It would be awesome to do a month long detail only on the weekends. I would really do a good job if I was able to work on it when I want, but a weekend is all it can usually sit idle till I need it. Consider yourself a lucky man
