Just took a new c-class out for a test drive

One of my buddies works at Mercedes and the new C-class's came in last week. Apparently they arent being rolled out till August 4th or something like that. However, employees are allowed to sign in and take the demos out for 30 minute time slots.

He's bringing it by so I can fling it around a bit. I plan to report back my findings. Debating on taking pics, Im feeling lazy though.

my friend invited me to one of those driving survey things for the C Class that let's you take them out for a drive for comparison info. Apparently, the AMG car is a test lap with you as passenger and it's supposed to be quite a ride. Would be interested to hear your opinions of it-

already test drove one today.

http://mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=202925

So you can see comments from the MB crowd. Ill copy my review. But overall hands down the E9X beats it all around, the C class has gone lexus in my opinion.

Dropped a car off for service today and test drove the new C300. Overall the car doesnt appeal to me it has the lexus IS mirror along with a very lexus interior especially the gauges. I still prefer the interior of my BMW (new 3series E90) at least the BMW does a better at making the plastic look expesnive along with the exterior styling cues of the BMW which give it a very stream line and aggressive look, to me the C300 with the AMG package looked chunky in the front and the mirrors didnt help the flow at all.

As for ride quality the steering has no feel at all very dead even more dead than a E350 sport. I will say at times the soft suspension is nice to have especially on bad roads (the C300 I test drove had the AMG sport package with sports suspension) but I would still take my BMW suspension and driving feel in a hear beat. Acceleration was very smooth in fact the smoothest Mercedes yet at WOT, as for speed I would get the C350, the C300 was SLOW on the same roads at WOT my BMW would be easily 10-20mph faster.

Overall its a nice car if you are older and prefer the luxury ride, but I think the younger folks like myself would chose a BMW 3 seires every time. I also didnt like the flip up command screen it looked cheap and I was thinking its only a matter of time before it rattles. One last thing the AL trim on the inside of the car seemed like painted plastic... I couldnt tell but it didnt look like the real AL trim on my BMW.

Alright, Im back and Im slightly impressed, more over not though.

First off, the car is aesthetically good looking. Definitely has a fresher taste and more up to date feeling than the old C. Almost a baby S class if you will. I was fond of all the angles except the rear. I think it looks too Hyundai/Kia'ish if you ask me. I was told to compare the sebring rear to this and they are apparently brothers, havent looked at one yet though.

Interior is typical Mercedes. All the controls are right on the center consol and theres lots of em. The one thing I didnt like was the seat controls were moved to the bottom seat cushion like everyone elses. I liked the old way of having it on the door above the arm rest. The window switches are right at the fingertips where they should be. However, when in reverse, the passenger mirror doesnt tilt. Not even an option, I think thats silly on a $40+ car these days. The side mirrors are huge square dumbo like ears. You can see a lot of the road and theres no blind spots, but I felt like they took them off an SUV. Also, they got rid of the power tilt/telescope steering wheel. Its now manual like ours.

The steering wheel wasnt thick like ours and I felt a lot of vibration from the airbag cover. If I left my thumbs just hanging on them, I could feel the engine and everything going on in the car through it. Very odd and could be annoying after a while. The gauge cluster was easy to read but the silver surround was so ugly and unexpected in this caliber of a car. Its something I would think be seen on a corolla or civic. There was an annoying button that would have so much crap scroll through the center screen on the dash that it was nearly impossible to get back to the beginning. I just gave up after a while. I didnt mess with the stereo or the nav just because I didnt have that much time and I wanted to just drive the car.

Alright, the part you all want to hear about. First off, the seats are lousy. They are so flat and unsupportive that I knew right away this was not going to be a good experience(these were the sport seats too!). When this car is started, you can hardly tell its on its that smooth. It was just the base 6 cyl with the 228hp but it held its own. Pedal feel was great, no lurching or dead space. It was easy to modulate the throttle. The brake pedal however had a little travel before it grabbed. Once it did though it felt very certain and stopped with authority.

The car came equipped with the sport suspension and upgraded wheels. They were the same size as the 335 with sport. Non RFT though and you could feel and hear it. The steering was razor sharp. I was super impressed with how the car just surgically went where you pointed it. The car felt lighter than it was because of it. There was hardly any roll accompanying it either. If anything, that was the one thing that beat the 335 making ours feel slightly vague. There was no grip in the seats though and I found myself using my knees to bolster against the door to keep any sliding from occuring.

The accelleration was adequate from the 6cyl. It got moving without any gripe or fight and felt decent for an automatic. Overall it was a nice car but didnt offer half the amenities the BMW did at the exact same price. I let my friend drive my car after I drove the demo. You could see him slumping in his seat from being in a car that was definitely better. He even admitted to me that he would feel ashamed working at Benz and getting the 335.
