Sorry for another winter wheel thread but i need some help..... Have seen a set of 17" BMW 285 style alloys but need advice on tyre sizes.





The add states both front and rear wheels are 8J with 225/45/17 on the fronts and 245/40/17 on the rears. Does this sound right or has the seller got his ad wrong? Am i right thinking by those tyre sizes they are actually a staggered set up?

According to http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com the 285 only came in the single offset and should be shod with 225/45/17. These are a 17x8J wheel.

Having said that, if you look at the size difference in the tyre between a 225/45/17 and 245/40/17 the later is only -0.95% or -6mm smaller in diameter so you could get away with those tyres on.

However for a winter tyre set up they would be great with 225/45/17 winters all round - which is what I run on a set of 158 wheels.

As above, it would be odd to have a wider tyre on a non staggered wheel setup but maybe it happened. If they are 8x17 all round then go for the 225 tyres and thats you ready for the snow.

Wait now for others to kick in with the ..... I've driven on snow for 55 years and never got stuck once and can't afford winter tyres so no-one else should buy them either ..... :-)

Im currently running staggered MV3's with 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 tyres. Will the above set up throw my speedo out?

Yes they'll be fine.

I've ended up sticking with an 18" staggered setup for my winter tyres with OEM sizes: 225/40/18 and 255/35/18. Yes, it shouldn't be as good in snow as narrower 225-rears, but I'm more interested in overall cold-weather performance.

I previously ran 225-width all-round and found an obvious compromise on the rear traction after moving from 255-width summer rubber. Hoping this year's setup will be more of a compromise towards cold weather performance.

Ok, so I'm running 225/45x17 Hankook Ice Bears on my 8J17 winter rims with no issue so you'll be fine.

I run 19s in the summer and the comparison of Satnav speed and Speedo speed shows no difference on either.

NOKIAN WR D3 for £105 delivered from oponeo

VREDESTEIN WINTRAC XTREME for £116 from my tyres


So what do people think? What would you go for?

Out of that lot I've been very happy with the Vredestiens, rant hese on an Audi AllRoad for 3 winters, fantastic grip, low wear and low tyre noise. Got a set of Nokian's for the wife's X3 for this year, but they where a heavier 4x4 tyre.

Let us know what you do.

I'm running Bridgestone Blizzard RFT's on my E91 - have to think that the benefits of Run Flats are even greater in winter - when you don't want to be getting out of the car and fixing a leak or changing a wheel.

Both the Falken and Vredestein good good reviews, depends how important an extra £100 is to you, if you can spend the extra the Vreds are great tyres.

Also Pirelli W 210 Sottozero S2 in the mix at £118 from mytres.

Got a budget of £125 max per tyre before fitting costs etc. Too much choice lol

I've run VRED Wintrac extreme at 225/40/18 all round on a set of 18x8J MV3 reps for 2 winters now.

Brilliant.

If you stick to any factory (any E9x size from 16 to 19) size you'll have no speedo issues as all factory sizes are designed to have the same rolling radius. (otherwise your speedo would have to match the wheel option fitted at build)

so 225/40/18 = 255/35/18 = 225/45/17 = 255/30/19 = 225/35/19 etc etc

I've bought those Falkens in 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 for the e90 for this winter after reviews/advice online. I ran a set of the Kumho KW-27s on my Z4 for a few winters (in 225/50/16 lol) and they were fine - quite an aggressive pattern hence a bit more aimed at proper deep snow conditions than the Falkens.

The Vredestein's are supposed to be a cracking tyre though, that's very tempting for an extra £27 a tyre...

The Hankooks are great tyres despite opinion on here.... I couldn't get Nokian Winters which I really wanted but I'm running Vreds as summer tyres and they're brilliant. I'd NOW go with Vreds for winter as well..

The more i read the harder it gets lol, literally all of them have good reviews depending on where you read.

I need to find an article that compares them all lol

I don't think you need to worry too much about the differences between winter tyres. The fact you are using winter tyres of the standards of the above tyres is enough really. I mean, its not like you'll be booting it about in the snow and ice.

Relatively slow, safe speeds will negate pretty much most of the differences between mid - high quality winter tyres.

This winter will be my first winter in a BMW (or any RWD motor), and I have a set of 235/40/18's to go all round on my standard MV3's. I know its a staggered wheel set-up with non-staggered tyres, but then they were cheap at £170 for a set of Conti's with 6+mm. I also have a pair of brand new Bridgestone 225/40/18 RFT winters too, just in case.

And as if all that still doesn't cut it, I bought a Range Rover just to be sure, lol.

I know how you feel, there's just too many different opinions/reviews out there but none compare them all

Hmm, don't fully agree with that. I agree that yes a shite winter tyre will outperform the best summer tyre in snow, but it's the other non-snow times (i.e. 99% of the time) that's just as important.

My winters will be on for over 3 months (fecking Scottish winter temperatures...) and I do "boot" the car when the roads are dry during winter. The dry performance of winter tyres varies dramatically, as does wet/snow performance, so it's worth getting a decent set IMO.

I had the VREDS. Winrac Extreme fitted on our 1 series they were superb, very good also in the wet and dry. I ordered them in the XL( Extra Load) which suited the 1 series perfect. You will not be dissapointed in them. Of course cannot comment on the others as I have never used them.
