Direct Line - RIP OFF

Just had my Direct Line renewal quote through...
£1,014,42. Robbing bastards!

Now I've been with these guys a few years now and found them to be very efficient, especially dealing with my damage claim in Feb for the car (non fault malicious damage).

They even want £123 to protect my NCD!

So I go on the different compare sites, and get Hastings Premier for £520. This includes everything you'd want (breakdown, screen, personal injury, legal, courtesy car AND protected NCD).

Called Direct Line back and the best they could lower to was £900. I did explain that he (they) were taking the piss, and if they treat all customers renewals like this they will rapidly be out of work. It obviously fell on deaf ears.

It seems nowadays almost the norm to shift insurer each year, which is a shame.

Not surprised at all, this is the norm these days. I dont think I have ever renewed a policy as its always worked out cheaper to go elsewhere after a year.

Just change insurers!...fcuk all that "loyalty" bullocks... unless they give you a decent discount...i wouldn't even stay with them if they price match!...because you've been with them for years....

Funnily enough I had mine (Direct Line) through last week,it had gone up,but not by much.

Went online (Direct Line),put in exactly the same details that were on the renewal details, and the quote was half the price of the renewal premium that I had just received in the post.

Worth a go Mart

They all try to catch you out with the automatic renewal and hope you don't get round to cancelling the policy.

I usually always get an extortionate quote with a letter to say the money will come off your account and you don't need to do a thing.

Normally when you go back with a better quote or even try their own website they come up with reasonable quotes.

Does your profession count against you? £520 seems quite a bit more than I'd expect to pay.

i only renewed with admiral because they were cheaper and i got a discount aswell.... i really moaned and told them i really don't giv a sh1t even if other insurers are charging me higher premium....i've been with you for a year, i deserve a discount...if you don't give me a discount i'm fcuking off out of principle....and i'll make sure that i send a complain letter aswell....due to the poor service i've received and why i'm not renewing with you fcukers!...

i got my discount.

They did this with me. My online quote was 530 (which i got before buying my e92) then my renewal notice came in at 780 a few days later. I phoned them and queried it and they transferred me to their customer loyalty team.....bish bash bosh they honored the online quote.

May be worth a try?

They are insisting they will not drop below the £900 regardless. So I'm going to Hastings which is half price, but actually has better features apart from the vandalism insurance, which is handy.

My job should go for me, but hey ho fuck 'em.

Your right, even £520 sounded steep, but I had a claim earlier this year when the car was damaged overnight. So once again, some thoughtless cnut has cost me big time.

Just renewed myself with LV, the renewal quote was £40 less than last year, but managed to knock another £35 off that with a phone call!
I'm quite happy with what I'm paying to insure my car now!

I had my M3 insured with Saga (old farts policy) for nearly 3 years and when I contacted them to say I'd changed my vehicle to 335d they said 'sorry sir, we cannot cover that car' leaving me high & dry.

Despite my demands to know why, as it's in a lower insurance group, I was refused an answer. I can only assume it related to the current thefts issue.

I insured with LV. £450 and that includes remap & business use. They are very mods freindly + UK call centres.

This happened to me with churchill. Renewals dont take into account online discounts, new customer discounts etc, so your as well to just cancel your policy and put it in again!

FWIW Aviva with 12 months for the price of 9 (I think it was) ... wanted £1180 !!!!

Got my quote from comparision web site. Admiral were @ £238.50. Lady goes through my quote I realised I forgot to mention I have a 15 year old son. When she added him it went to £312.xx. [30%] increase. I did not hear the pennies as i was talking over her with a "no thank you". Goes back to the comparrison site to adjust my quote and admiral were @ £266.10. Ended up with Privlidge @ £254.40. But this an even better rip off. I am selling another car [a 52 plate GTi] and so I am not even useing it so I was told I have to use temporary cover. Cheapest I can get is £298.10 PER MONTH for a car that is parked up securely and not in use, so I had an idea. My wifes insurance [on a Golf Diesel] expires next month so take my daughter off [she is 26] and put her on the GTi for a month whilst I sell it. Result for my wifes insurance is monthly premium goes from £46 to £72 a month just to take her off and a further £60 for the GTi. I quite frankly would sooner give the money to children in need rather than insurance companies in need. PS. sorry for the rant, but that feels a lot better.

I think it helps if you have other insurance polices with Directline. I'm paying £239 with £50 cashback via Quidco for an E92 335i, 10 yrs NCB - have home, pet and the wifes car insured with them also!

I was with Direct Line about 15 years ago, nice and cheap

Made one claim and nice quote went from 500 to about 2000 quid

Once you made a claim off direct line do ont want to know you and always quite silly prices next year

Interesting stuff. The Mrs was with direct line and the automatic renewal quote was £20 less than last year. I rang them to see about my own car and they did me the multi car discount.
My company wanted £490, Direct Line did it for £308...

I'll watch the claim advice tho, happened to get a crack in the Windscreen shortly after renewal but have been caught with a £40 repair excess when most others are free. Watch the small print guys..

Will shop around again next year..
