Upgraded my AA Xede.
I got my AA Xede upgraded to the new R5(R6) version this weekend. Turned out I had the oldest software version (BMW 335I(V1.0) or 60-2: Bosch Motronic (V1.0)) even though I bought it just about three months ago. So, I've also had to update to newer timing pattern.
Couple tips for those who also have Xede and plan to upgrade: the instructions do tell that your ignition has to be on when you connect Xede to serial port of your PC/Laptop. For some reason I thought it only takes inserting the keyfob...- my bad; you also have to push Start engine button without depressing break pedal, so all the lights on dashboard go on. Only then your PC/Laptop will see Xede, considering all the serial settings are ok. Another thing - if you have the older version like me and also need to update to newer timing pattern, make sure you re-open the COM port, or just simply restart XUpdate software after you finish updating to new Maps. Now, to performance part: I couldn't really feel any power gain comparing to what I had with older version, however the power distribution is definitely way better. I did have a minimal turbo lag comparing to stock before and now there is no any lag at all. Feels so much like stock turbo lag wise with so much more power added. Great improvement overall. Thanks AA .

Thanks for the write up!
I 've been too lazy to update mine, but after reading this, I'd better get on the ball... I suspect i have the older version like u, cause i feel a big lag until 4k rpm, than a sudden rush of power that pulls until the redline... its fun, but i prefer more linear powerband. Q: 1. if i need to update my timing pattern, do i do that after updating the map or before ? 2. which map did u use - r5 or r6 - and why? 3. how long did the process take? thanks again

1. Update timing pattern AFTER map update, just as manual recommends. 2. I used R6 map, because I have stock exhaust. R5 is recommended for aftermarket exhausts and BOVs. 3. The whole process took less than 1.5 hour with me getting stuck at those two points that I gave tips for. So, if you do everything right from the beginning - shouldn't take more than 1 hour total.

When you route that cable make sure you test the connection with Xede before closing all the covers. Because I've tried the usb-serial cable first yesterday before I connected serial-serial one, and the connection didn't work for me, even though I chose COM6 and higher in XUpdate software for usb-serial as manual suggests. Maybe I just had bad usb-serial data cable.

opened the hood at at 9pm and finished everything by 10 pm.
thx to the accurate instructions provided by AA and few pointers by Bimmerlex, I had no prob what-so-ever. went for a test drive. immediately, i could tell there was a big difference off the line. The big "lag" i felt until 4 k rpm was gone. initially, that also made my car "feel" slower.... maybe because that sudden surge of power was gone, replaced by a smoother delivery of power. in a way, i miss that burst of HP/TQ... you know that feeling when you are pushed back into your seat... however, after driving for 45 minutes, I realized the car felt much more responsive at all rpm range... the throttle seemed more sensitive... it felt like a true BMW inline-6... smooth like silk, with only a hint of turbo lag. Great job, AA, for providing all that extra power without changing the original personality of the e92 335i.

+100. EXACTLY my impressions. However, as you said, the power is still there. It's just distributed more linear.

I have the xede right now and haven't had a chance to do the upgrage yet. Is the lack of smothness that you noticed in the old version a sort of pulsing in the power delivery around 3-4k rpm? That's what I have noticed and I can only feel that is second gear. I feels like the boost really kicks in around 3k and then shorlty thereafter, like before 4k, the boost back off a bit then comes back up. Like pulsing. It makes it hard to drive smooth. Is that wat you felt and is that what the new version made better?

there's still a nice kick... but it comes at lower rpm and the delivery is smooth without pauses or pulses, all the way to redline. Quote:
if anyone has a boost gauge, can u hook it up and see what the peak boost is? the previous version i had peaked at 13 psi. i think we can use little more boost... i am sure the engine can handle it... can't wait for Xede V3...

Go to AA web site. Get to the section "335i software", download update program (XUpdate) and map files to the laptop. Connect laptop's serial port with Xede's serial port via serial male/female data cable. Follow the instructions that are also on AA's site in .PDF format.
