What to do to a 335d
It's been a while since I've been on here but after getting rid of my 320d, me and the wife have decided it's time to replace it's replacement with something else and have decided on a 335d touring.
She's fairly easily persuaded and I've already agreed with (told) her that it's having a remap. The question is though, which one is the best? I'd quite like to have the one which gives the most power and torque. What else is recommended? intercooler? air filter? exhaust? gearbox software? Dpf delete? Egr delete? What is the most powerful 35d engined car out there?

Robin,
I believe there was one for sale on here in grey that had 400bhp and could do over 60mpg....... But seriously, I have a remap by R-Spec in Bicester, she's making about 340bhp and 500 ft lbs or so. Having a big power one is fine but as I'm sure you know, the more you have the quicker your car will wear out. I will be getting shot of my DPF at some point but that's all I'll be doing to it. |

Personally I'd start with handling mods - suspension, bushes, brakes etc. Then, once you know the car will turn and stop, I'd do what I'm planning for my 330d - DPF delete, stainless exhaust and remap to match.
As for who to use, how long is a piece of string? EMaps get excellent reviews wherever you look. Evolve are forum sponsors and also get very well spoken of. Superchips, DMS, Thorney... The list is really long. Speak to a few, see who seems interested, see who gives you confidence in their work, and use them

Remaps are a funny thing.. I've been doing am quite a bit of research and a lot of the reputable companies figures don't really satisfy me.
We have results at 350hp but these cars made around or over 300hp to start with on the same rollers. So the gains aren't what they seem. I was speaking with my tuner.. His rollers are renowned for being super tight and they seem to make about exactly what's quoted from BMW. When mapped (keeping dpf) the most he's happy going to is around 340hp - 55hp gain. Otherwise EGT get far too high. So do your research and don't belive peak figures.. |

I did all the handling stuff before and had the BMWP brake kit but I spend a grand on Bilsteins which were amazing for 6 weeks then went crashy and harsh so I don't want to go down that road again!
I'll probably do H&R springs as I can get them through work along with a few other bits. I just wanted to know what I can do to get more power from it.

In my opinion, find yourself a standard 335d to start with. You will not be disappointed. Then you can modify it when you are ready.
For me, the fun of owning a nice car is being able to modify it yourself. I have a standard 335d and I'm more than happy with it. The other reason that my engine is still standard is due to the BMW Warranty that I have. One of the first things that people appear to do is a remap. For £300-£350 its a no brainer as the gains are good. Some also have the DTUK tuning boxes fitted. A few people on here have removed the DPF, I'm unsure on gains though. A few people have also had custom made exhausts. Again, I'm unsure on gains but I believe they have a slightly nicer note. A few have coilovers and plenty in the UK/US have H&R springs. A few have LSD's and they say that this transforms the car. A few have installed bigger brrake kits too. At the moment, the bigger mods (meth kits, larger intecoolers etc) are for the 335i. Spend some time reading through the forums and I'm pretty sure you will come across a few interesting threads.. |

Ive thought about this too.
Power mods: I gather a 335i Intercooler will fit a 335d. Meth kit (using adaptive boost controler) DPF delete and fully open exhaust Bespoke Remap to take advantage of mods Nitrous if you wanna get silly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=bXVbe5Z8uc4 BUT The gearbox will very soon break, rebuild with tougher internals (spendy) or put in a 335i manual box with upgraded clutch and lightened flywheel.

The LCI gearbox is stronger is it not? I know it is in the 535d and I assume the same applies to the 3?
Has anyone actually done a manual conversion? (I don't intend to but I'd be interested to know)

I dont think its that strong.
Some big torque 335i's are breaking boxes in the USA. With these mods you'd be making huge torque (600-700lb/ft maybe)

Didn't know they did that with diesels. I can't watch the video you kindly linked because Vicky Butler-Henderson came on and after 3 seconds I had an overwhelming urge to put my head in a gas oven.

I would have said that about the Bilsteins to be honest.
What's suggested if not H&R? (I can get H&R very cheap, that's all)

The ride is very harsh on the H&R. very harsh indeed. If you search through for uk members and their reviews of the springs you will see.
Depends what you want from your car mate. If it was My tourer. I would do the following. M3 arms/suspension gear front and rear. Stock suspension with Fast road Geo. Roughly -1.5 to -2 camber up front with stock toe or slightly more towards 0. Rear running Stock camber with slight toe in. Then if funds permit I would recommend the PSS10 or the V3's. You see what you find very quickly in a quicker E9X is that the handling ain't great mate. |

You are looking at just under £500 for all arms front and rear. (note the M3 arms allow you to run much more negative camber than stock anyway). Plus a proper geo would be around £100/£150. approx.

I definitely won't be buying a set of PSS coilovers again.

They might not now be but when I bought them (2008 I think) they were, plus the discount I got from where I was working then made them cheaper than retail by a fair chunk...
PSS10 - part number 48-131636 Currently for sale in 2 places in the UK on Google, cheapest is £1230. Anyway, after my experience with them, they're not what I'd be buying this time round.
