Read the last line in the OP's question.
If youre referring to me, how about you go try it again or read my response to bnj.

has anyone done a diy intake? is it possible on this car? i took out the airbox of my honda and just stuck a filter on the end using the stock pipe. it sounds amazing, i want to do the same to the bmw, i dont care about performance or brand names i just to hear the turbo.

in all seriousness, why do you want to replace your stock intake? on the E46 platform, intakes had no benefits. the "gains" ranged from -5 to +5 hp, which doesn't really do much on top of 300 hp. the cons are bigger, with added dust and particles getting into the engine, oiled K&Ns killing MAF's etc.
and intakes on a turbo engine has even less hp gain.

has there been any testing to show this? BMW spends a lot of time designing their intakes. i don't disagree that conical intakes are more beneficial in getting the air in, but the cons are bigger for a regular daily driver than the pros are.

Having just finished taking physics, when I saw the intake box I looked and saw how they tried to direct air and such, but you can easily see because the intake for the second turbo is in the back of the box they had to allow an empty space for air that they did not bother to direct, basically it made the second turbo fight a little harder to get air. The airbox design, while it may be a good airbox, its still an airbox which will never ammount to a true intake. As for cons of a conical intake, I dont really see any, now if you had 3" of flooding normally where you live and wanted to drive through puddles I could see why you wouldnt want a cold air intake, but in 99% of conditions it is way more benificial.

If you look down the engine bay, theres a lot of open air that can swirl around and cool the engine down, plus that side of the engine isnt near the exhaust, so it actually remains a lot cooler. Someone get a pyrometer and measure the difference in temp from side to side. Im willing to bet its substantial. And like someone else said, you cant argue with a dyno.

Every high performance (modified) cars I've seen have the cone filters.
I'm not saying they provide better air flow performance then stock, just sucking heat from the engine bay vs a ram-air intake. When i drive my car in the rain the water is dry on the hood after 1 minute in the garage, thanks to radiant heat from the engine. I'd wager all the gains listed above are directly related to improved airflow. I'll stick with other mods to improve performance (comming from a past cone filter setup)

looks promising...Im looking forward to further testing....the pipes look pretty cool but that big red filter I guess is just something you threw on to see what it would do?

The filter that we use for this system is U.S. mfg'd by S & B. It has the deepest organic cotton pleats avail in the cone style industry. We use these in all of our cone air kits that we mfg. The size shown (red filter) flows approx 900cfm, which can support the requirements of this engine NO problem. When the RWHP requirement goes up to lets say 450+, you simply upgrade to the next filter size up...available up to 10" cone length.
The pic shows the kit minus the filter. Excuse the welds (prototype), our kits are all heliarc welded. Since you're a Porsche fan...I'll send you a Porsche fan pic to your site ![]() Marty |
