Haltech revs up exports with EFIC finance
Engine management company, Haltech, is using the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation’s Headway product to win the export race. By Simon Sharwood.

When a BMW 335i twin-turbo racing car swept over the finishing line to win the gruelling Bathurst 12-hour endurance motor race in April 2007, Mark Bevan, the Managing Director of Haltech Engine Management Systems, and his colleagues shared the victor’s achievement.

Bevan and his team were excited because the car in question was fitted with an advanced Haltech computerised engine control unit that had ‘maxed’ the BMW’s power, fuel efficiency and reliability to ‘conquer the mountain’ in one of the world’s toughest road races.

Haltech’s products have their roots in the 1986 when Steve Mitchell, then a recently graduated electrical engineer, went to work with his father Bill on the development of diagnostic equipment for fuel injection systems.

But in the company’s early days, the chance request from a motoring magazine to solve a fuel supply system for a high performance ‘street machine’ led to much bigger things.

Steve responded to the magazine article by designing a world-first computer-based engine management system that could be programmed and fine-tuned on screen in real time while the engine was running.

Systems of this type became commonplace and Haltech enjoyed export success from its earliest days. But by the time the company’s current owners acquired the business in 2003, its competitors had caught up with their technology.

Some serious research and development was in order to again give Haltech the winning edge and take advantage of considerable offshore opportunities for its products in markets like Japan and Europe where performance-enhancing technologies are widely adopted.

The reason it didn't mention Vishnu was simply because it seems like that article was an article ABOUT Haltech and it's orgins and owners.
Even though the car had Vishnu's tune...the PROcede, it uses the Haltech device. They didn't want an article about Shiv's tune in the car, but the use of the Haltech device in general.

As SteveMD stated, you only need to look at the car and see the Vishnu stickers all over it to know that it was tuned by Shiv at Vishnu using the PROcede (Haltech).

Wait, WTF? If Haltech created the Procede, but Shiv actually programmed it and created the maps, how can Haltech take credit? Building the computer ain't the tough part its programming it that is the real genius, isn't it? Its like the maker of the 335i's ECU taking credit for the insane performance of the 335i, when its BMW who wrote the maps.

Now, if I am an asshole, and completely misinformed, and in fact Haltech did more than just BUILD the procede computer, and in fact did some programming, my bad and I'm sorry for opening my mouth.

one does hardware, the other does software. both are difficult, exacting and DIFFERENT skill sets. Granted, to do software for a microcontroller requires a greater level of hardware knowledge. circuit design and implementation is electrical engineering; software is, well, software engineering.

It doesnt bring me joy... what brings me joy is having the truth shown. Im sure with a little search you can find a thread where Shiv said the procede is NOT a haltech unit.

The whole "hardware vs. software" argument depends on the application. The software installed on the hardware of a desktop computer took more time to develop and test than the hardware it resides on.

On simple applications such a "computer" for a car, the hardware (such as sensors, resistors, and wiring) does most of the work and therefore deserves most of the credit.

I am not taking anything away from Shiv, but I wouldn't call much of what Shiv does "software engineering."

lol... some of you guys should write soap operas. Haltech is the Australian distributor for our PROcede. It doesn't really matter to us if we weren't mentioned in that particular article.

So haltech re-distrubutes your product in austrailia? Is it like a re-label thing where they buy them from you in bulk, put their name on the box, and then sell it?
