Mismatched tires...
Hello all,
I bought my car in January equipped a set of four Bridgestone Potenza S-04 summer high performance tires. Because of where I live (eastern part of Virginia, in the Appalachian mountains) and the weather we get over here sometimes, I will have switch to all season tires. The rear tires are about ready to be changed, but the front still have a good life left on them. I want to change the rear first and then later change the front with the same make/model tires when they wear out... The question is, during the time the car will be equipped with summer front/all season rear, will it make the handling unsafe? Anyone with experience can comment? Thanks, G PS: For the all season tires, my options are 1) Goodyear F1 Assymetrical All Season (500 AA A) - $231 2) Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position (400 AA A) - $228 3) Continental ExtremeContact DWS (540 A A) - $213 4) Pirelli P Zero Nero All Season (400 AA A) - $199 5) Hankook Ventus S1 Noble2 (500 AA A) - $199 I want a tire with decent grip that will last long... based on the rating, looks like options 1, 3 and 5 will last the longest, with the hankook having a cost advantage over the Goodyear. Can anyone give me feedback on the Hankook? Last edited by Gizm0; 03-31-2013 at 07:56 PM.. |

All seasons have less grip and will make your car more oversteer prone and tail happy if you put them in the rear and leave performance summers in the front.

Sure, it probably won't make much of a difference if you drive like a 70 year old. But remember that you can't control how other people drive or the world around you. Emergency situations is where things like this will make a difference.

I would not recommend running a summer performance tire up front and all-seasons in the rear. Just replace all four and try to sell the front tires if they have a good amount of tread on them. Your handling characteristics are going to be unpredictable otherwise.
