Luxury Tax

How many have had to pay the US Luxury Tax? How much did that add to your final cost?

How is the amount figured? Why did you have to pay on one car and not the other? I thought it was any vehicle over $30,000.

check with your state... the federal luxury tax went away in 2002....

for ex, nj charges one at the state level:
Effective July 15, 2006, new car dealerships will be responsible for collecting a 0.4% surcharge on the sale of new
passenger vehicles, light trucks, SUVs, or vans for which the following conditions apply:
1. The gross sales/lease price of the new vehicle is $45,000 or greater, before trade-in, manufacturers
rebates, or additional Handicapped Driver Adaptive Equipment.
AND/OR
2. The new vehicle has an average EPA mile/gallon (city and highway) rating of less than 19.

NY does not, so i did not have to pay a lux tax on my car even though its from a NJ dealer.

We just got screwed in Canada, there is a $4k gas tax just levied on those "gas-guzzling" vehicles sold after April of this year.

Just buy a pick up, they're exempt

But really, there are not many cars that get hit and the maximum is $4k, but it can be any increment of $1000 starting at $1000. The only BMWs that get hit are the M5/6 and 760 and even then it isn't for the full $4k. The only cars that are $4k taxed are from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley and Rolls. All Vettes are excempt.

I may be in the sameboat as you. I bought my car in NJ but I live in PA. The question now is. Does PA charge the Luxury Tax?

That's the problem. The dealer wants to charge me the Luxury Tax. He knows I live in PA. I'm just doing a little searching before I have to pay for the car.

Yes, there is a gas-penalty ranging from $1k to $4k for cars that have high MPG average. SUV, Turbo, and Supercharge cars are the main target for the tax collectors.

Just double tax if you buyout a lease and apparently a 6% leasing fees if it's registered in Chicago.

They always have some way of getting you (in addition to income, property, death, sales, and countless other taxes).
