What I should know before going to a detailer

What are some good questions to ask a detailer before I let him touch my car? Just to make sure he knows what he's talking about

Ask what products he uses, examples of previous work. Who do you have in mind? Most best detailers are part of well-known forums and often display their work.

Thanks. I'm not exactly sure yet. I want to keep it under $200 to remove minor swirls. Detailers on forums usually charge a premium.

To be honest with you.... most of the better detailers (not the ones from high volume shops) will generally be the one asking most of the questions. They want to know your expectation so they could best match their service to it. Most will work off a menu system and offer ala-cart add-ons.

Entry level (wash & wax). Don't expect paint correction from this service. This is for vehicles that are well-maintained. It generally will take about 1.5 to 2 man hours (give or take). No heavy cleaning so dirty cars need not apply.

Mid level - Some minor paint correction is to be expected. This is generally a one step process and it would includes claying (Low speed machine polishing with an All-in-one product is most likely). Start to finish about 3-4 hours.

Signature Level - 2-3-step Paint corrections is expected. This service generally comprise of compounding, polishing, and jeweling. Most work takes a full day to day and half to complete.

Show car Level - $$$$$$$$$$ and lots of time. This type of service is rare and it generally excludes all daily drivers.

Most Detailers (not production type) will average about $30+ an hour but then it is market dependent. With a budget of $200, Mid level service is in your range but do expect to pay a more for the Signature level. Paying to have your car detail is like getting a hair cut. You could get one for $12 and you could also get one for $100. The skill level between the stylists doing the work is vastly different and this is exactly what you are paying for.

If you are realistic with your expectation then you generally will not be disappointed. Asking for documentation of previous work is a good start. Ask about their process and equipment used. Ask if they use a paint gauge prior to any major corrections is another one. Stay away from places that advertise "Full Detail" at a fixed price with no description of the work. You are asking for it IMO.

Good Luck.
