335d code P2457 won't pass emission test

Hi, I just got my car not too long ago, bought it used.

I have 1 code and CEL on which is enough to fail the e test here in ontario.

Its P2457 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooling System Performance

When I went to get my etest done, 2 monitors were "not ready" which we in ontario for 2009+ vehicles can only have 1 monitor "not ready".

These monitors are: NMHC Catalyst , and Oxygen Sensor Heater. This is as on the print out from the ministry's computer system at the mechanic's shop.
The mechanic said this might be from a Oxygen sensor wiring shorted or open, I just looked under my car, everything looks ok on the O2 sensors and their wiring.

I'm having troubles wiht my INPA correctly reading my DDE, so I can't read the oxygen sensors. The trouble i'm having is that it wont connect to the proper control module from the list, it says "D73N57C0" but this module isn't listed, So I use the MSD 80.0 for N43, N53 and N54 but I can only scan for codes, no adaptation, and no live data.

I also have a generic store bought obd code reader, and it tells me what monitors are ready and what aren't. At the moment HCC is not ready, and DPF is not ready - mind you, DPF was ready before I cleared the CEL - every time I clear the CEL it also resets the monitors and I have to run the "driving cycle " to adapt all monitors again.

I did find the DPF line connecting to the exhaust was a little loose, perhaps it was leaking dpf on the ground and not squirting it inside the exhaust?
I put it back on but I would need to drive the car so that the DPF monitor resets.

Anyhow, the P2547 code is probably nothing to do with DPF, If i could fix this issue, i'm certain i'd pass the etest.
Has anyone any suggestions as what I could do wiht the EGR? take it apart? clean it? any help is greatly appreciated!

By the way, the car drives and pulls like a monster, no issues there

Welcome, another fellow Canadian.

Sorry I can't help but hopefully some other might be able to.

Where in Ontario are you?

From reading several threads about EGR (both here and other places), I would check the EGR cooler for leaks. There have been failures of the welds of the cooler (especially the 90 degree bend, and coolant leaking into the intake flow.

Also, the EGR valve should have been replaced (for many model years) during the recall 2 years ago. It's possible it has failed, or is the old model. If it was replaced under the recall, it's possible you may be able to get it replaced again.

As near as I can tell, the M57 in the US/CA is not supported by 3rd-party programming tools (INPA, BT, etc.) The DDE is new and unique to the M57, hopefully it will be covered when the N57 engine (in the new X5 and 535d) is added to the tools.

The oxygen sensor monitor probably wasnt ready because there arent any oxygen sensors on the car

For the INPA module, your best bet at this point is to try the N57 module.

I should have been more clear, it actually says " Oxygen Sensor Heater ".

But it doesn't say that it is not applicable, so they do look for it...

I have to call bmw and find out if there is a recall on this or not, and if my car had it done.
I can't find info (google) about a recall on this, only speculation and uncertanties..

I doubt it is as simple as the O2 sensor, I had similar issues, regardless of what drive cycle, system was not-ready. It was the DDE. At that time a DDE software update fixed it.

That sucks, looks like you need to hack the code to get it to pass.

My generic OBDII reader displayed a P2457 code. When I connected INPA, it was a 4873 code which is "EGR Cooling Plausibility. Spring for bypass flap on the EGR cooler is broken".

Dealer replaced the EGR cooler and all is well. It was (is) CPO so I didn't try to fix it myself but a broken spring doesn't sound too difficult to repair/replace.

Well my warranty is expired, plus ive heard horror stories about grand touring in london, so stealership is not an option for me.
I have removed the egr and throttle valves and scraped off the black crap, it solved my throttle code, but still have the egr cooling temp code, infact even thpugh i clear the codes it still shows up automatically, even without starting the engine and letting it run, so perhaps its just the egr temp sensor thats faulty? I ran out of time to put my ohm meter on it and see, but if anyone knows where in inpa i can find the temp value from this sensor please share. Thanks!

Hi, i replaced the EGR cooler on front of engine. But you should try to remove it and free the vacuum controlled valve, mine was stuck. Spray wd40 or something similar all over it and move it by hand back and forth until its free.
Unless yours is clogged up, then try to clean it out.

P0101 and P2457

Fellow 335D owner, I have an emission test to do and know that I have P0101 (Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem) and P2457 (- Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooling System Performance_) errors. Not sure what to do? Do I need to take apart my EGR and clean it? any suggestions? I recently changed my OEM dirty filter to the K&N one which help my car from stalling, but P0101 didn't go away after I cleaned the Mass Flow Sensor.

Any help will do guys!
Thanks,
Stan
