Confused... 2008 328i convertible + 2OP warranty

Hi guys, I'm thinking of buying my first BMW but I'm really confused by the 2OP warranty... hopefully someone can help me get everything straightened out!

I'm considering a 2008 328i hard top convertible. I want to keep the car 6 years, so I'll need an extended warranty to cover me for 2 years. I was thinking the 2OP plan would be good because it's backed by BMW USA.

Now the confusing part... the warranty says that its purpose is to protect you from mechanical problems. However, in the exceptions section, there lists "convertible tops (except for electronics)".

Does anyone know what this means? Any dealers or BMW USA people in these forums that may be able to help as well?

To me, it seems like a reference to soft tops, where the top, itself, is not covered (soft tops may tear, dissintegrate, fade, etc over time) but the lifting system is covered.

However, this could also be interpretted as the electronic motors-only being covered and nothing else is covered (like the mechanics - hinges, non-electric lifting system components, etc).

Also what if a mechanical or electronic component malfunctions and the entire thing crunks and kills itself and causes collateral damage... is that covered?

I sent an email to BMW USA but trying to get a straight answer isn't going very well... they just type the same confusing text taken from the 2OP contract as a response.

Please help! I'm so confused

Yes, the 08 328 vert is a hard top.

My email to BMW USA was answered with a reply that didn't clear anything up (just as vague as the 2OP contract)... guess I can try calling them direct tomorrow.

If it does turn out that the top is covered, I'm a little scared by the wording of the contract... I find it surprising that contract wording would be so vague... Don't they use lawyers to put these things together? :P

Yep, they use lawyers to confuse the public, then later to state what it realy means to protect BMW. P.S. my dad is a lawyer in private practice.

Hmm that's scary UncleWede.

I'd hate for them to say it's covered, then state otherwise when I need to call them on it!

I'll post tomorrow with what I find out from a phone call to them... maybe others will also find this info helpful.

Hope you get an answer - that is the part that scares me the most the top mechanism and would love to know if it is covered, would make me consider keeping the car longer!

Aye, since I want to keep the car for 6 years, I need to find some extended warranty to cover the top in order to justify the extra cost of the top.

Ok, just got off the phone with BMW USA. I called 1-800-831-1117. Someone may want to call to verify all of this, just so we can be safe.

According to CS, Exceptions: "convertible tops (everything except electronics)" means that the motors and lifting mechanisms are covered in the case of any failure not involving external influances (i.e. stick getting stuck in there).

It seems that my assumption may be correct, in that "convertible top" refers to something like a soft top which may fall apart and degrade over time.

I also asked about crunking where something malfunctions and the top kills itself... he said crunking is covered as well by the 2OP.

Sounds like the 2OP will do the job, but to be safe, it would be great if a few people here could call up and see if we all get the same answers!

Garage List
My biggest concern is the top too that's why I've decided to bite the bullet and lease (24-mths @ 15K/yr) and buy additional miles upfront.

I need just about 20,000 miles a year.
