Winter Tyre Sizes for 19's

Hi,

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get some winter tyres to be safe in the cold weather. For the amount of time they are on in the year, do you think buying part-worns with say about 5mm of tread would be a good idea? I'll get them swapped back when the warmer weather returns.

Standard tyre sizes are 225/35/19 & 255/30/19 but these don't seem so common - can I get away with 235/35/19 & 265/30/19?

Also, I know you should put winter tyres on all four corners, but do they need to be the same make or would having a different make on each axle be OK?

Thanks

You will only be creeping along in actual snow for a very small percentage of the time so don't do anything regarding fitment that you wouldn't do with summer tyres. Winter tyres are worn out at 4mm so bear that in mind if buying part worn.

Shouldn't you be thinking of narrower tyres not wider?

Most of the part worns are euro cast offs as they deem them unfit over there at 4-5mm.

19" winters cost a bomb so add the £15 per tyre for balance etc and again in the spring that's £120 already!

Get some second hand 17" alloys and you can get 4 brand new winter tyres for about £400 and they are always there when you need them.

If you get a puncture you can use one while you get your 19" repaired etc.

Plus they come with near enough 10mm tread new

Just my opinion

BMW have an online tool for working out the best combo for your particular vehicle. For 3-series 225/45/17 all round is popular.
