Wet Spark Plugs
I was experiencing WOT misfires for the past couple of thousand miles that became more prevalent on cold days. Since it had been more than 20k miles since I last changed plugs and I'm tuned, I figured that would be a good place to start. So, I replaced the plugs and the coils for good measure and have eliminated those symptoms.
but... This makes the second time that I have changed spark plugs to find plugs four and five were wet. Overall, the bank 2 plugs are darker than the bank 1 plugs. I sent an e-mail to my dealership today, but I was wondering what the boards thought I might be looking to replace next? I was told the injector recall was performed on the car when I bought it CPO in March of last year. Since then, BMW has revised the injectors, so there must still have been an issue with whatever is in my car. Comments appreciated. |

I'm pretty sure it was fuel. My cousin identified it as fuel, and he is my de facto mechanic. There was actually a drop on the tip when I pulled it from the engine. I don't have an issue with losing oil or blue smoke out the exhaust, so I don't think it's oil related, but I am no expert.

Yea figuring out whether there is oil/fuel on the business end (electrode) is the key here. IF it’s limited to the threads, it’s most likely oil caused by a leak somewhere. Could be and likely would be the VCG, but could also be from other areas. If you have wetness on the electrode, you have a bigger issue. Either you are not getting an efficient burn and the car is running very rich (maybe leaky injector), or you have oil fouling the combustion combustion. The latter could be quite bad.

Thanks for the responses. I know my exhaust tips are black and that it smells rich on start-up, but I also park in a corner and really only notice it when I'm in that corner or in my cousin's garage. Well, if it's a gasket or injectors, I should be covered either way.

as others have said these are the two most common issues...
oil on threads: valve cover gasket. fuel on tip: leaky injectors.

I just replaced the spark plugs on bank 2 of my car and noticed that the spark plug for cylinder 4 was wet and smelled like fuel. The fuel evaporated after being in the air for a little bit. Cylinder 5 wasn't as bad and cylinder 6 was normal. I'm pretty sure that I have a leaking injector on Cylinder 4. Can you replace just 1 injector with the new ones and code it or do I have to do the whole bank?

New style injectors have to be installed in banks of 3. If the car already has the new injectors you can do one.

I think replacing all three in a bank together is still the recommended course of action. Contact your BMW dealership to see if they can work out a goodwill repair as this is a known issue across the production.

I had to go to the dealership on the 16th, since I didn't receive a response to either my e-mail or voice message, to discuss this issue. The shop foreman said if I still had my plugs, he can move forward with diagnosing the injectors. I dropped the car off yesterday, and yesterday evening I received a call that they replaced my injectors. I don't know if they did 3 or 6, but at least they got replaced before my CPO expired.
There are other things to accomplish, so I probably won't have my car returned until Thursday, but at least that is one less item I need to consider for my future repairs budget. Thanks to all that responded to my thread! |

I got my car yesterday, and everything seems fine. They replaced all six injectors with the latest 079 parts. Now I need to put my OFT map back into the DME and enable the PROcede to see if I still get boost surge at part throttle.
