Help: Car just stopped

Was just sitting outside my place for a minute or two, engine idling. Car otherwise working normally - then out of nowhere, the engine just stopped. Didn't sputter or die, just stopped as if I pressed the stop button.

Will not restart - as if its not getting fuel. Turns over fine (plenty of batt volts) and then stops after the 3-4 second start attempt.

anyone seen this behavior? I don't recall any of you posting it.

How's the DEF level? Did you get a message in the past about it?

Could be the fuel pump.

Not at issue. Refilled about 600mi ago

Maybe disconnecting the battery for a while will help reset everything and possibly restart.

Do you have a code scanner?
I am all out of ideas, I'll just let some more knowledgeable members help out.

Me too :-/ I do have a scanner - have a pending code (no SES) for 46F2 - DDE - which has been there since my dealer visit in December - pending so no action taken. I would think this would likely be related but then again, i would think the SES should trigger

Found a 'fest thread with similar issue, his car restarted by time the tow truck arrived but I've tried quite a few times and batt is getting low - calling back to BMW roadside assistance in AM.

I really want to hang onto this car, but my doubts grow every day.

huh. there aren't very many reasons a diesel will shut off. pretty much sure to be fuel related, whether electrical or mechanical

Update:

Car started first attempt this am, idled for a bit, i backed up 10 feet and it 'clunked' to a halt - felt almost like transmission but remember that yesterday it was in park when it stopped. Im not sure if fuel starvation would cause an abrupt stop. Maybe greek is onto something with the cam sensor?

Still no SES

Maybe an air bubble or leak in your fuel pump. Maybe a purge cycle first if you or your shop knows how to do that, and then if that doesnt work, inspect the pump and or replace. Just a guess though.

If you can get a tool that will read BMW codes, you'll know most probably what's causing this. For the SES to come on, this on off problem needs to happen 1 or 2 to times more. Then the SES will be triggered.

I have such a reader - will see what dealer says.

No surge. Smooth then just stops
