Roger, most of us here wouldn't recommend waiting until 100,000 miles. A couple guys took a picture of their fluid when coming out at 80 or 90 thousand and it was black. Nothing to do with BMW transmissions, my general recipe is to change at no later than 50,000 miles. My theory is 2 fold. I would want the fluid to come out before it starts to turn color. 2nd part is if you change twice as often and only do a drain and fill, it sort of equates to a drain, flush and fill and 2 changes at 50k and 100k, respectively. If all you do is a drain, you don't get the old fluid out of the torque converter. I'm not a fan of flushing a transmission.
My advice since you went 100,000 is NOT to have it flushed. You are runnning the risk of breaking small particles loose and possibly clogging a valve or orifice elsewhere in transmission especially with very high miles fluid. Some mechanics say if you let the fluid go too far, it is best to leave it alone as it may have issues with the new fluid causing it to slip. |

I was going to type the same but I'll just throw in a "I second this" here. I wouldn't be surprised to see you have additional issues after changing the fluid and filter. You either get the car on a proper, more intensive maintenance regiment than BMW's early on or you just stick with what you've been doing. Had this EXACT discussion with my SA last time I was in for service. I'm approaching 46,000 miles so I'm going to change the fluid next time I'm at my father's shop in FL. My SA and I were talking about people servicing the transmissions for the first time after 100,000 miles and how many he's seen have transmission failures just after service. I wouldn't take that bet if, you have nothing wrong currently, let it go.

For what its worth, I'm fairly certain mine took 5.5 qts. You have to follow the refill procedure correctly or you might only get like 3 qts in there.
Also, the black fluid measurement doesn't really apply. According to zf the fluid oxidizes to black while in the trans, from the sound of it all fluid older than a couple months would come out black. |

There is a lot of fluid in the trans and torque converter that doesn't drain. You still do the change because a new filter and some new fluid is better than an old dirty filter and old fluid

Without going into powerflush mode, i've read there is away to cycle fluid through the torque converter. Something about sucking fresh fluid out of a full bucket and letting old fluid come out into empty bucket on opposite end. You do this until you see clean fresh fluid going into "dirty fluid" bucket. I have no clue if this would work on the ZF trans though. If ZF has the external cooler, there would be a decent chance. I will research and report back. |
