I personally wouldn't, but it's your car.

Yeah you can. I personally have done the same and it definitely cleans all the dirt and grime up. Just don't do it if you have exposed intake filters.

Like _Sinister_ said, should be all good as long as no liquid gets into your air intakes.

Wrap them with plastic ziplock bags and seal with zip ties for extra security.
Ask me how I know.

I have to be extra careful under my hood doing this kind of cleaning though since I have BMS cowl filters and DCI's. I go really anal and wrap my BOV too just to make sure the engine doesn't inhale any of that cleaning shit.

Like everyone else said, wrap all the goodies with plastic bags and you should be fine.

I don't really like doing the engine cleaner thing but my radiator hose exploded fluid everywhere and made a huge mess. It was driving me crazy and so I cleaned it and had no issues.

It is rare for an engine bay to need that 'deep' of a cleaning. That being said you need to bag all the important stuff(air filters, alternator, etc.). Also some people power wash the engine bay. I have done this before and later had issues. It really isn't needed, but then neither is a clean engine bay who only I see.

You should be fine but DO NOT use those high pressure water pumps to rinse it off, gentle water rinse only to prevent any water entering where it should not be (cable connections, sensors connections etc.).

We were told to use Selsun Blue by our SA. Not sure why, that stuff is so expensive.

Also, never with the car at operating temp.
Do that stuff on a cold car.
The shock on some parts going from "HOT" to being hit with even hot water is bad.

I personally just open my hood from time to time and pressure wash the entire engine bay. On new cars it so easy and you do not have to worry about damaging the electrical systems. Older cars I would never recommend doing anything like this since you could wipe out your electrical system.

Every time I wash my car I open the hood and clean all areas with a damp cloth. It is an easy step that adds maybe 5 min to the car wash, and I do not have to worry about water getting into the electronics.

Few months back, I was having my car tinted. Friend runs a tint shop and he works out of a very large Toyota dealership since he does all their cars. While I was waiting, I saw the detailing guys pressure wash the engine bay of every car that came in while they were still hot. Basically pull the car in, pop open the hood, soak the engine in cleaner. You could watch it sizzle and steam, wait 5 minutes, then hit everything with the pressure washer. In the time I was there, they did this to 8-9 cars. Pretty much every time you let a dealer "detail" your car, this is happening.

+1

I typically do this 2-3 times per year and use Simple Green for my cleaning agent.

Oh, if you live in Calif, do not do this on the street. Never happen to me, had a friend get cite in CA when his neighbor turned him in for cleaning his engine in his driveway and the water with oil drained down the street and into the storm drain. Californians do not take kindly to you putting oil into their water systems.

I do this all the time but prefer to follow-up with a quality conditioner. Keeps the tangles out and leaves the engine bay feeling soft and supple.

I usually use an air compressor to get rid of the debris / leaves, and just use a damp cloth on the cover, chargepipe, rad core support and towers. It just doesn't feel right power washing inside the engine bay.

I always just pre-soak with water (straight from hose, no pressure), then spray simple green everywhere, let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing visible surfaces with a rag and then thoroughly rinse the entire engine bay with water; again, no pressure.

Take a 10-15 min. drive afterwords to burn off any water that is laying in crevices, and you're done.
