Improving the Forum

A lot have people have been expressing their dissatisfaction with the way this forum has been going recently.

I have gone off topic as I enjoy the banter when there is not a serious E9* discussion to be had due to the limited number of new threads from the UK. I would rather go off topic within reason (no agony aunt questions please) and keep the chat and frienships going than the other option of letting the forum die because there are no live threads

What do you think?

I agree with you, but when you say "go off topic within reason", the problem is that we all have different ideas on what is reasonable and what's not...

I definitely wouldn't want to see the UK forum drying up however. Our next target is USA - Mid-Atlantic (they have over 63,000 posts in their regional forum... we recently overtook the Canadians are we're now in 3rd place:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=19

... and with people like Carlos on board posting thousands of <insert your thoughts here> threads, the UK will soon be at the top of the leaderboard.

Seriously though, Viv has contacted the admins several times, as I also have, to see if we can get an off topic section, but they just never reply (does this basically mean that they won't change anything and we have to live with the ways things are...?)

Perhaps topics should be serious requests for advice and information that utilises the broad experience and knowledge of the numerous professional members of the forum excluding any psychiatrist and agony aunts. Perhaps we could request a sticky of off limits topics for the UK starting with alleged threesomes

I nearly ran out of breath reading that long sentence - you could have stuck the odd comma in here and there

Are you thinking about an NSFW subforum or just a single sticky off topic thread?

I thought commas were something we might fall into if we dont get a place to have 'off topic discussion'

jwbmw, you could try contacting the admins with your suggestion, and see if they get back to you. I think a large majority of the UK members agree that we really need something done.

I agree with what you have said. The banter is a pleasant part of the forum and there is no reason that both cannot be interspersed with the original purpose of the forum.

As for the agony aunts etc. I think if the advice given was taken on board and left at that then the thread would not have run for as long as it has. Perhaps the amount of attention it has been given fuelled the cravings for attention the postee appears to require.

As for the recent unfortunate thread re. alleged threesomes, I do hope that you have not taken my comment of the fact I was with two men as any inference of a sexual nature. ie. giving someone an opportunity to post the thread. The comment was made purely in a factual way, ie. 2 men (my other half & his much older brother BTW) who both like cars and had an opinion regarding the original question of M3/635d. I seriously hope no-one else has thought this.

If you look at BMW Land, this appears to be predominatley about cars. Is this because many of the people on that forum are running older cars which by laws of averages will be subject to more faults/breakdowns etc.? Most of us on here are in the fortunate position of owning new or nearly new cars so mechanical problems appear to be much less common. Apart from poor Tony etc.

The issue of 'off-topic' threads & posts, scattered amongst 'genuine' BMW threads within the UK section has been raised several times over the last few months.

I've tried to highlight the problem to the admins, Mark & Jason, on several occasions.

Unfortunately, nothing has yet been sorted out, in order to help improve the current situation.

I've been a long term user & contributor to the forum, so I do feel a little annoyed when recent problems have affected members bothering to visit the UK section.

I've gone over, what I think is needed to improve the current situation, several times in the past. Suffice to say, I think off-topic threads need to be separated into a UK sub-forum & I think we need a couple of administrators to keep an eye on the threads within our section.

Due to the problems which have occurred recently, & due to the fact that I'm still waiting for something to be sorted out to improve the situation, I'm going to start a new thread in the 'Site Related Announcements' section.

If you feel something needs to be done to make improvements, then please visit this link.

The admins do read the threads in that section, so please make your views known.

All the best.

Viv

I think its important that everyone who wants something done about the UK forum, states their thoughts on this thread that Viv has created.

I was refering to the originator of another thread in relation to a threesome and was not:
  1. thing about your post
  2. wanting to offend you

Thanks for your contribution, as usual a good one.

As a relative newcomer to the forum, I think it is just fine.

Personally I am not really bothered with O/T posts - as long as they are posted with O/T in the title I just avoid them.

This is clearly a friendly community. For me, I'm interested in getting answers to BMW questions and when I have more experience of my motor I hope to help others out too.

But I avoid the chat, I'm not really interested in (or have time for) the "social" side.

A very well behaved forum, some of the more chavvy car forums are awful!

After contributing to the forum for over two and a half years, the UK section looks like it's in a bit of a mess- believe me.

I'd like the place 'tidied up' & I hope others are in agreement with me.

Thanks.

Better than somebody posting a thread entitled: I will never know true love as my Daddy won't buy me an M3

PS I am Londoner through and through, just happen to live up Norf
