Lightbulb PSS9 owners please advise me?

I have pss9's on my e90 335i with 19's.

About 1 finger gap front and back. Set to 6F/4R. (That's what I told the shop to put it at, maybe its off. Ill have to get under the car an check.)

My question is that the front end feels a little to bouncy on highways or on uneven bumps and feels like the spring rates or shocks might be to soft or maybe the problem is there to hard.

Anyone with similar issue?

What will remidy this problem?
Do I rase the front end for more travel?
Lower/Rase the setting(1-9)?

Thanks for you help.

I don't have PSS9's, but I can try to help. First, how low do you have the shocks from stock? (i.e. stock sport is .6", so do you have them down to 1.2"?). If the car is too low, you may be on the bump stops when you hit a bump. Check to see what the setting is (6F/4R), sometimes people don't always do what they are going to say. When you push down on each corner (push down hard), what does that shock/spring do? Is pretty different from front to rear (i.e. night and day difference)? Have you jacked up the car to make sure everything is not in a bind and everything is where it needs to be?

Sometimes bouncy means a few things - a) your on the bump stops (aka rubbers) and is too low for the shock, b) your shock is shot (springy feeling), c) high speed compression is out of wack (not the case for the PSS9), d) your shock is not valved appropriately for the spring or e) shock setting is too firm, e) suspension dynamic problem.

First off, thank you for your help.

The car came with OEM sports package. I had a local shop do the install and never actually looked under the car to see how low or at what setting he had put it at.

I did tell him to set them at 6F/4R multiple times. I have about 1 finger gap front and back.

When I take my hand and press down on the back of the car, the car goes down like it should. When I press down in the front it dosnt move at all. Its a rock. No travel at all but that could just be the higher spring rate considering the wieght of the engine.

What you say makes perfect sence about the stops. Maybe its to low and its hitting them. Ill have to check it out this week and also check to see if it is indeed set at 6F/4R.

What happens if it is set to 6F/4R and its not touching the stops?

A) - the spring rates in the front are 400, rear is 630. The if you had the front and rear on the same shock setting, it should move up and down at "almost" the same rate. (B) sounds like the front is too firm. (C) it may be too low and on the bump stop. From my understranding, the lower the number the firmer it is. Try setting the front at something like 7 or 8 and move the rear to 5. Just to see if the car is different. I'll call my friend with Bilstein and see if he knows of any issues or what could be the cause of this.

On the PSS9's the lower the number = the firmer the ride.

So 1= firmest and 9 = softest.

I have mine set to 3 @ the front and 5 @ the rear. Works wonders.

Sorry, forgot that general consensus is stiffer at the front, softer at the rear.

Im at 6/6 and it feels pretty good. And yes, the front is like a rock, you cant get it to compress by hand almost at all, and the rear does move a bit. Ive considered going 5/5, but not until I get my tire pressure where I want it. I think with PS2s, I need at least 34 and Im not that high at the moment, and yes, the front does feel a bit loose times, usually only at higher speeds on the freeway and stuff.

My main issue with the front is that I feel like it needs more travel and be more absorbing when hitting bumps or level changes in the road.

The rear feels good. Im thinking to rase the front just a little bit more and set stiffness to be softer. Maybe 8.

Again, this all depends on what its curently set at. Ill check this weekend.

Keep you guys posted.

4fr 5r. A huge improvement over stock sport suspension. Perfect manners on highway, a bit rough around the edges on broken pavement. Your mileage may differ.

I spoke to him. They really haven't had a problem with what you are describing and said to check to make sure they were installed correctly and look at your settings. Try turning them all the firm, then all the way soft, then the to the setting you want. Then drive and see if that has helped. Said you will notice a considerable difference from your OEM setup even on the softest settings since the spring rates are more aggressive than stock. Did you look and see what the installer set them on?

I ended up rasing the front about a half finger higher and set them to 8F/7R. Just to see how it rides.

So far so good. Ride feels more plush and still handles well.

I think that everyone that owns coilovers should take the time to try different setting to see what best fits there driving styles.

Thanks everyone for you help.

Yea, you gotta do it yourself to make sure its right. Im at 6f/5r and really like the setup. Very smooth ride and good handling.

But I can feel that the car needs sways. I had H&R rear sways on my last E90 and it was great, and Im thinking this car can use it too.

I suspect you lowered you front over 10 mm more than the rear. This enough to throw the car out of balance and change the geometry so it is noticeable (it is not trivial). Like the OP said, corner balance the car and will feel the same as before but you really only need the same drop front and rear to achieve this since it close to 50/50 balance already.

I dont think the general consensus is stiffer in front..and softer in the rear. This is my second set of PSS9s..I had them on my last Audi...and I think it needs to be the other way around. Having it stiffer in the rear should help illeviate some of that understeer that the car comes with.

I am at 6F and 4R.
