I have a 2006 e92 325 and in the 7 months i've owned it i've noticed it uses a lot of oil more then any other car i've owned and ive owned an rx8.

i have also noticed when accelerating there is sometimes small amounts of smoke coming out the back. the car has done 55,000 and has full service history

Any help what the cause could be.

Potentially piston rings or similar.

What oil are you using as cheap rubbish or the wrong grade may be the issue.

Chances are it's the cars breather system that's at fault, if it's done lowish town/short duration mileage this'll be the area to concentrate on and judging by age/mileage the cars done that's where I'd stick my money on. We do a fair few usually due to these traits, oil wise cheap oil doesn't help CBS oil service intervals are IMO way if the mark, oil should be every 10k/1 year check oil services on the car see how many have actually been done bearing in mind it's been on the road for nigh in 8 years, with that mileage I'd bet on 3 may be at a push 4.

Re the breather issue the car will essentially consume its own oil, look under the oil filler cap for signs of mayo type deposits also when engines running remove the cap you may feel the engine sucking as the caps removed also tone may change slightly, difficult to put into words but I'd say that's you're culprit.

Don't get a cheap breather from say Euro's get a complete breather with associated pipe work from a BMW dealer the whole outfit will consist of 1 breather and 4 pipes costs around £117 for the complete out got fittings a bit fiddily as the pipe works all around the inlet but it's a straightforward operation for someone with some mechanical know how time wise a good 3 hours it replace the breather and pipes(pipes get contaminated with emulsified oil)hence the need to do these as well.

I use castrol edge in the car, but god only knows what was used before I owned it.

I checked the oil cap and there is no mayo like substance, i did notice the change in tone when the oil cap was removed and when i put my hand over the hole there was definitely suction keeping my hand there.

so what does all this mean?

I'd say breather oil wise if you don't know drain it and start afresh

Watch this video quickly as it kind of explains the oil cap theory, this one sounds quite bad but you'll see him struggling with the cap due to suction you'll also hear the whistling which shows how bad things can get.

So I've had the car in the garage and they have recommended a new rocker cover as apparently the CCV is built into this and cost about £350 does this sound right?
