Just to be pedantic, surely painting it black is not the same as it being made of a black material throughout. So this test is a little flawed on that basis....?

. . . I did a course on this last year!!

The heat (Infra Red Radiation) radiates from the surface of the material, so it does only need to be painted black - the thickness of the black material is immaterial (sorry!).

Another thing I learnt on the course (or that I still remember anyway) that some thing may seem counter-productive. . . You refurbish a small bathroom and replace the radiator with a nice shiny chrome towel rail. In the winter, the bathroom is cold, but the rail is getting hot. This is because chrome does not radiate as well as a painted surface. The remedy is to cover your towel rail with errr, towels, as they radiate better than the chrome!

Interesting to know. Would black towels be better than white ones?

If the intercooler was black internally, would that also help absorb heat from the air passing within it?

Hells Teeth, I wasn't THAT interested in the course - which was for infra red detection of gas leaks!!

Oddly, yes, black towels would be better than white

Internal colours? That's absorption, rather than radiation, so it may be that a shiny white would be better, but I'm just guessing now.
