New Navigation Question vs. Old

call me stupid or call me whatever you want

but I have an 07 335XI, and it has the iDrive system in it.

I have been reading all this CIC and stuff like that. What is all this?

Also I have been reading its possibly to upgrade that navi to the newer one or update the software to run better.

Can someone please give me some insight on this matter

You can read up more on the CIC retrofit kits here:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=395559
and
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=476622

Two different vendors offering the retrofit.

If you go through with it, you'll essentially be running an 09+ i-drive / navi. It'll be hard disk based, with loaded maps on it. And it gives you potential to get the new ConnectedDrive features which integrates your iphone/ipod more with the i-drive so that you can control more of it from your i-drive, go on the internet, use facebook or twitter, stream music via bluetooth or video from a cable, etc.

Sounds great and all, and I'm definitely considering it right now (going back and forth with them), but it's quite expensive. It would be easier if I just had an 09+ car to start and did the COMBOX and ConnectedDrive/6NR retrofit. Oh well.

If i wanted to upgrade the software, what would the new software be like? same appearance?

also if I did the upgrade to the 09+ navi would I need to replace everything or still keep all the features

and also would I still have all the stock settings there like the service intervals and all that good stuff
