Winter/Summer Wheels Vs All Season Wheels
Looking to replace my first set of wheels for my e 92. I'm thinking of replacing the bridge stones with some Michelin PS 2. But I know they are a summer tire only. Since it snows a lot here in Canada I'm wondering if it's better value to go for an all season tire or get a set just for summer and another set just for winter.
Can you guys tell me what you do and what are the pros and cons of each. Thanks |

Fellow Canuck here. My very forthright advice is to get two sets: nothing beats a summer performance tire from may - october and nothing beats a winter tire from november - april. All seasons should be called "all suck", as they suck in all seasons!
And to save on mounting costs / hassle, invest in a separate set of rims. Lots of inexpensive replicas or Rial rims (see Tire Rack) that look quite good for winters and are surprisingly cheap. And it saves your OEM rims from being banged up or facing corrosive salt. (Or if you have OEM rims that you don't care for, use those for winters and take it as an opportunity to fit larger summer rims.) Consider that this is not just "common sense"... in most northern EU countries where climate is similar to ours separate winter tires are mandated. And in Quebec (in many ways our most progressive and EU-like province, in my experience) they are also required by provincial law. |

But there are decent upscale all-weather performance tires. Still, nothing beats two different sets. Bring on the smokin' hot 19s + ultra performance for summer, stick with 17 + winter tires for the winter.
