DIY: Installing BMW Alarm Without Removing Wheels

Removing the left rear wheel can be a pain. Rusty wheel screws that dont budge, rusty hubs that glue to the wheel, a need for a torque wrench and 17mm socket, a chance of improper wheel alignment, damage to rotors if the jackstand slips, etc.

With a little manual dexterity and good spatial awareness, you can do the alarm install without removing the wheel at all.

Follow the printed instructions or refer to the DIY page with pictures (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1487) for the ultrasonic detector and hood switch install.

When it comes to installing the sired on the left rear wheel well, jack up the rear left side to the point where there wheel just touches the floor. The jackstand should be placed at the plastic rectangle a little forward of the rear wheels. There should be about 10 inches of space between the wheel and the top of the well (your mileage may vary on aftermarket suspensions). You need about 8 inches to do this without removing the wheel.

Use a wrench to remove the screws holding the wheelwell cover. There are a few on the ends of the well, a few at the top, and one slightly behind the wheel. It will go faster if you do everything by feeling. I recommend doing this in daylight, and sitting down.

*Warning* Before doing anything, make sure your jackstand is secure! If it slips, you run the risk of jamming your hand in the wheel well. Remember, safety first!

With the screws removed, pull down the wheelwell cover and resume installing the bracket and siren. There will be enough clearance to install and secure everything without having the remove the wheel

I havnt done the coding for the alarm yet, but I believe its a possible DIY with the $90 BMW cable and Progman downloaded.
