Center Differential Problems - 335xi

So I heard some clanking noises coming from underneath the car and took it to a mechanic. They told me that it's because the center differential is shot. Does this have anything to do with the LSD? How do I go about getting this fixed? Thanks in advance.

I've tried looking it up and nothing comes up for center diff.

i'M GETTING A CLANKING NOISE TOO. i HAD MY MECH LOOK AT IT AND HE TOLD ME IT SOUNDED LIKE POSSIBLE THROW OUT BEARING NOISE. IT DOESNT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME, SEEMS TO HAPPEN MORE AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN A WHILE. THE NOISE WILL STOP AS SOON AS I PRESS THE CLUTCH IN. WOULD LOVE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THIS IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFO.

www.realoem.com--> find the part number, then buy it cheap at www.getbmwparts.com. Next time, change your Fr/Rr/Center differential fluid every 30K miles to avoid this type of costly repair. Also, this has nothing to do with your LSD.

What LSD? Did you install an aftermarket Diff? Because the XI doesn't come with an LSD.

My center diff was replaced at 40k, once it was replaced and the whine was gone, I'm thinking it was going since I bought it used.

My diff gave vibrations after they reinstalled it wrong when installing my LSD.... expensive joke...

Afterwards while chasing the vibrations, they found out that the two rubbers demping the diff house were shot and causing the bumpy sound upon change of load (Accel, shifts etc)... you could ask your mech to look at it... they were not that expensive...and solved my annoying bumpy noise...
