My initial N55 impressions (LCI E92)
Well, I took delivery of my 2011 BSM M-Sport E92 335i on Monday and it's got about 300 miles on it.
A few first impressions: BRAKING -Initial bite isn't quite as fierce as my 2003 330i ZHP car -Brake dust is VASTLY improved... maybe 1/3 as much as my old ZHP POWER -I've been braking it in hard (personal choice) haven't had it over 6k but not very impressed. However, its been 90+ degrees and 75% humidity all week and I had the A/C on. The one cool night I got to run it (77 degrees) it was noticeably faster. Still, it will need a tune. I suppose I'm being a bit unfair as my last hotrod was a 430whp/415wtq 2,800 lb V8 RX7. GAS MILEAGE -Wow. I've been braking this car in hard, and I don't keep the car at any one RPM while driving... so... driving around at 3500rpm, then 1800, then 2700, then 4000, etc, plus many WOT pulls to about 5500, I'm still *AVERAGING* 21mpg. That's simply awesome for the hp/tq the car makes. FIT/FINISH -Simply awesome. It's new though... not a single rattle, squeak, or workmanship issue RIDE QUALITY -Wow. This car rides like a CADILLAC. The M-Sport kit has sport suspension and 18" runflats and from all the reading I've done on here I expected it to ride like crap. I'm really impressed with the Bridgestone Potenza RFT's so far (but they are new...). I have a set of 19" Nitto INVO non-RFTs to go on and am expecting equal ride quality as they are not runflats It is getting a new car professional detail/prep on Tuesday, and that night I'll be installing Eibach pro-kits, front lowering perches, and my Miro STP3 19's with INVOs. I'm EXCITED!!! Quick service drive pic, as it's all I have at the moment: |

I agree about the brake dust, much improved, my 3 previous Bimmers were bad about excessive brake dust. Power is not what my N54 was but it is still has some positive attributes, and heat is definitely not the friend of an N55. My car runs much better on a cool morning than when it is nearly 100 degrees outside and the A/C is running. It does get slightly better gas mileage, smoother acceleration, and better engine/exhaust sound than the N54. IMO, the runflats are not as bad as some portray, but they are damn expensive.

Looks beautiful, welcome.
I fully agree that the ride quality is excellent, I was expecting a sports-car like harsh ride. The 2011s as I understand got a revised suspension and it's much better at soaking up bumps. I couldn't be happier with the ride. FYI I replaced the 18" 193M + Bridgestone RFT on my car with 19" OEM wheels + Hankook V12, the ride is noticeably improved - bumps are no longer harsh and choppy (compared to the non-RFT, that is; I think with the RFTs it's good in its own right). It's also significantly quieter (as in, on the highway I said to myself "wow, I don't remember it being this quiet before"). Handling/grip is improved as well, the car holds a sharp corner with a lot more confidence. The RFTs tend to stutter over pavement in higher speed turns, especially if the pavement is broken. I'd recommend taking those RFTs off and getting some non-RFT tires ASAP. On the topic of power, I think the N55 pulls quite strongly; then again, I came from a 4-cyl compact. I'm getting a JB3 Stg 1 and an AR 4" catless DP installed in about two weeks, I'm expecting a big boost in power.

Nice, I just raced a ls1 fd and got to ride in it...let's just say the torque of the ls1 is pretty deceiving as to how quick it is, while the n55 feels slower than it really is. I guess it's all in the power band, but don't expect the n55 to keep up w/ your beastly fd

I've been a bit more adventurous with the throttle now and it certainly has some gettup. I'm somewhere around 450 miles or so. I'm going to "finish" breaking it in after I finish this tank of gas, which should be about 700 miles or so. Most of the ring seating happens in the first 100 miles of driving anyway (that's why you break it in hard). Anyway... I just got the My BMW Remote app to work... now that's cool... only has remote lock/unlock/track features but it works, and will come in really handy when I drop the car off at the detailers on Tuesday while I'm at work. I'll be able to track it live and see if it leaves the building for any reason |

Above 90F my N54 also dials way back. I don't think it's limited to the N55. Our turbo Saabs did the same thing. Once you get above 90F turbos even with intercoolers dial back ignition and therefore power. My car feels totally different in the cool mornings and evenings. The Dinan tune may make it feel worse since it must dial back even more than a stocker.

I have the identical n55 - I love mine - but the africa heat down here (with a tune) and other mods - does not matter. heat is the enemy on this car, I can't improve that (at least with the stage 1 tune because it rolls back power in high heat) : (
congrats though - the BSM e92 m-sport is beautiful - have fun keeping it clean - mine is garage kept and a california duster is always used before driving! ; )

I'm a firm believer of not touching the paint EVER if I don't have to.
It gets washed once a week if it needs it. It's taken a lot through the years for me to keep from wiping it clean after every little thing, but that is the NUMBER 1 way swirls get introduced into your paint. Dusters are the devil I just got it back from detail a week ago and it's 100% perfect in every way. I'm trying really hard to wash it the right way (2 bucket method, etc) but it's not always easy. I've since put on Eibach Prokits and Supreme Power lowering perches. I'm not happy with the rear stance, was really hoping with the 275/30/19 there would be a bit less gap. I think I'll be switching to H&R Sports but we'll see. |

I don't have a swirl problem at all, for what it's worth (coming from a black metallic paint owner) I only use Prima products. http://www.autogeek.net/prima-car-care.html The wash bucket with the dirt screen is also a must. I use Meguiars Ultimate for the soap. http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/product/4823 The duster has never let me down - but it is also important to note that my car is clay barred as well and a very light hand when using it... to each his own i suppose... one last thing, I have H&R sport... it lowered it a bit rolled fenders just because I have a hook up... 275's back there is possible with the right wheel and offset. the ride feels no different than stock. just my .02

I went for a ride today in a buddies pre-LCI 335 coupe with Konis/H&Rs and the ride is noticeably stiffer than my Prokit/perches setup on stock MSport struts, but the ride height on his car is perfect....
I'm trying to justify doing the swap again. It took me ~4 hours to do all four corners. I could probably do it again in 2.5 hours now that I know what I know but am not looking forward to it. What I've found is that if you have rims with a lip or double step lip, you really need the fenders *ON* the tires for it to look right... any gap looks funny. If you have CSL style wheels or wheels with spokes that extend out to the edge of the wheel you can get away with one or two finger gap and have it still look decent I will snap pics of the Eibach drop before I swap to H&Rs, just so the forum has some reference points. |

Holy gas mileage!
My current tank (from 600-900 miles so far) is averaging 25.2mpg! And I'm still breaking it in, just not as actively. I get on it at least a couple times in every trip to and from work (14 miles one way). I'm impressed! My old E46 330i ZHP average 25mpg when I babied the hell out of her... usually got 23-24 when I drove like I'm driving now with the 335. Now only if I could get a satisfying spring/stance setup. |
