Canflap, what is it and why do we want it?

I must be a noob, my searches have not come with much
does canflap do anything for us other than change the sound? does it add performance or anything else?
any other pros or cons?
I am pretty much stock, N54, stick tranny

Sound on cold start ups. Other then that, nothing.

And more drone when cruising at low rpm. At least in my experience. But the only positive for me is the better sound of cold start up.

Its really only for the sound. Makes the exhaust sound deeper and more aggressive.
